3233221 - Z53 MISFIRE ERROR

The diagnostic equipment signals the following error: Misfire
Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Visually check on the instrument panel that the I.E. fault warning light is not flashing while the car is driving Continue to Step 1 I.E. fault warning light flashing See table   K48  I.E. FAILURE WARNING LIGHT FLASHING
1CHECK ERRORAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or Examiner Plus) and transcribe the errors and environmental parameters.Check for '(General) Misfire' error onlyEnd of diagnosis'Upstream lambda probe' error present See table   Z56  UPSTREAM LAMBDA SENSOR SIGNAL ERROR
'Mixture concentration' error present See table   Z50  MIXTURE STRENGTH ERROR
The 'Misifre in cylinder X' error is present See table   Z54  MISFIRE ERROR IN ONE CYLINDER
The '(General) Misfire', 'Catalyzer and/or 'Downstream Lambda signal' errors only are present Continue to Step 2
Other errors presentIdentify and eliminate the cause of the anomaly. Continue to Step 11
2CONTROL UNIT CIRCUIT CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Visually inspect the condition of the engine management control unit wiring, connections and earth.No faults should be present Continue to Step 3 Faults in the control unit electrical circuit Restore the correct connections If necessary, replace the components involved. See   E5030  PETROL ENGINE ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT Continue to Step 11
3CHECKING FUEL PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fuel system pressure is correct Op.   0510C10  Continue to Step 4 Pressure not correctRestore the correct pressure; if necessary, replace the faulty component. Continue to Step 11
4CHECKING FUEL QUALITYAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the quality of the fuel, making sure that there is no water or other impurities Continue to Step 5 Impurities are present Clean the tank and fill with new fuel Op. 1040A24 Continue to Step 11
5CHECKING SIGNAL PLAUSIBILITYAll OKProblems metOperation
Checking plausibility of the MAP/flowmeter sensor signal See Test   1056BX  MAP/flow meter signal plausibility Continue to Step 6 The signal is not plausible Replace the flowmeter Op. 1056B12 Continue to Step 12
6CHECKING INLET AND EXHAUST SYSTEM SEALAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the exhaust system visually and by listening.

In particular, check that there are no leaks downstream of the MAP/flow meter sensor, considering also:

  • blow-by;
  • canister circuit;
  • brake servo vacuum pipes;
  • injector O-rings.
Continue to Step 7 Leaks are presentRestore the exhaust system seal and replace the affected parts if necessary Continue to Step 11
7ENGINE PROBLEMS CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Check that there are no problems with the engine. In particular, check:

  • correct cylinder compression Op.   0510A10
  • correct engine timing Op.   0510A20
  • correct rpm sensor position
  • gap between rpm sensor and phonic wheel within permitted limits;
  • visually for absence of faults on phonic wheel, such as broken or chipped teeth
Continue to Step 8 Engine timing incorrect Ensure engine timing is correct Op.   1032B10  Continue to Step 11
Rpm sensor incorrectly positionedReposition the sensor correctly Continue to Step 11
Flywheel defective Replace the flywheel Op.   1024A28  Continue to Step 11
Compression insufficient Continue to Step 8
8CHECKING CAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out R/R on head to check the valve sealCheck the condition of the cylinders/piston rings Continue to Step 9 Insufficient valve seal Overhaul the cylinder head Op.   1016E10  Continue to Step 11
Cylinders/piston rings wornRepair the leak Continue to Step 11
9KINEMATIC MECHANISM CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the kinematic mechanism is not oscillating by road testing the vehicle.

In particular:

  • clutch not jerking;
  • couplings/bearings not faulty;
  • engine mountings and supports not faulty;
  • suspension loading correct;
  • wheel balancing correct
Continue to Step 10 Clutch jerking Replace the clutch Op.   1810A20  Continue to Step 11
Anomalies in joints, bearings, blocks or mountsReplace the components involved Continue to Step 11
Front suspension not loaded Replace the shock absorber Op.   4410A12  Continue to Step 11
Wheels not balanced Balance the wheels. Replace the faulty tyres if necessary Op. 4450A70 Continue to Step 11
10CHECK ERROR IN A SINGLE CYLINDERAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or Examiner Plus)Check for the presence of 'Misfire at cylinder X' errorEnd of diagnosisError present in at least 1 cylinder See table   Z54  MISFIRE ERROR IN ONE CYLINDER referring to the cylinders concerned
Error not present at a specific cylinder See table   Z54  MISFIRE ERROR IN ONE CYLINDER referring to all cylinders in succession
11DELETING AND CHECKING ERRORAll OKProblems metOperation
Use a tester to cancel the errors in the control unit.Carry out a road test and ensure the error does not recur Continue to Step 12 The fault persists Continue to Step 0
12CHECKING CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persistsSearch for the fault starting from another symptom'
