3233003 - B10 ENGINE DOES NOT START / UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES

The engine does not start. When the key is turned, the instruments light up, the starter motor turns to the Avv position, but the engine will not start.
The MIL warning light should come on with the ignition on and go out once the engine has started; If there is a fault in the reconfigurable matrix the CODE failure message comes on.
Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
First check that there is fuel in the tank and whether the inertia switch has intervened

Then check:

  • that there is no water, other fluid or dirt in the fuel tank
  • the seal of the fuel pipes and connectors
  • the condition of the air intake circuit
Continue to Step 1 Presence of dirt in the fuel tank Clean the fuel tank Op.   1040A10
Fuel pipes damagedRenew or replace the pipes (see Assembly 1040B)
Air intake circuit component damagedReplace the component (see Assembly 1048A)
1CHECK I.E. AND CODE FAILURE WARNING LIGHTSAll OKProblems metOperation

Place the key in the ON position and check that:

  • the i.e. failure warning light comes on for about 4 seconds and then goes out.
  • the CODE warning light comes on for less than a second and then goes out
Continue to Step 2 The i.e. warning light comes on and remains on See table   K50
The CODE warning light comes on and remains on See table   K52
Both the warning lights come on and remain on See table   K56
The i.e. failure warning light does not come on See table   K53
The CODE warning light does not come on See table   K55
2CHECKING WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socket

Check:

  • that there are no faults in the engine management control unit
  • the plausibility of all the parameters.
Continue to Step 3 An error is detected in the control unitContinue according to the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
Lack of dialogue with the control unit Restore the connection between the engine management control unit and the diagnostic connector ( See   E5050  DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT ).
3LOW PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the fuel supply circuit, low pressure side: if necessary, use the diagnostic equipment (Examiner) to measure the pressure values Continue to Step 4 Pressure not correct: fuel filter faulty Replace the fuel filter Op.   1044B10
Pressure not correct: electric pump faulty Replace the electric pump Op.   1040A74
Pressure not correct: low pressure pipes faultyReplace the low pressure pipes (see Assembly 1060F)
4HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the fuel supply circuit, high pressure side: for example, using the diagnostic equipment (Examiner) to measure the pressure values Continue to Step 5 Pressure not correct: pressure pump faulty Replace the pressure pump Op.   1060E10
Pressure not correct: manifold faulty Replace the manifold Op.   1060F30
Pressure not correct: injectors faulty Replace the injectors Op.   1060F10
Pressure not correct: high pressure pipes faultyReplace the high pressure pipes (see Asembly 1060F)
5CHECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persistsSearch for the fault starting from another symptom'

0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Turn the ignition on and check that the initial test on engine check and CODE warning lights is carried out
The engine check warning light should come on for about 1 second and then go out, while the CODE warning light should come on for about 4 seconds and then go out

Check

  • that the inertia switch has operated;
  • that there is fuel in the tank
  • air intake circuit;
  • correct operation of the flow modulating valve;
  • correct operation of the exhaust pipes.
Continue to Step 1 The code light remains on See table   K52  CODE FAILURE WARNING LIGHT ON
The engine check warning light does not carry out the initial test See table   K53  I.E. FAILURE WARNING LIGHT OFF
Operation of inertia switchRestore correct operation
No fuelPut fuel in the tank
Air cleaner dirty or partially blocked Replace the filter element Op.   1048A14
Incorrect operation of flow modulating valve Continue to Step 1
Exhaust blockedRepair the exhaust pipes
1CHECKING WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out active diagnosis of flow modulating solenoid Continue to Step 2 Solenoid not working Check wiring continuity See   E5050  DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT
Solenoid not working Replace the solenoid valve Op. 1060G56
2CHECK ON FLOW MODULATING VALVE ACTUATORAll OKProblems metOperation
Check operation of pneumatic actuator Continue to Step 3 Actuator not working Replace electropneumatically-controlled throttle body Op.   1060G52
3CHECKING WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socket

check

  • that there are no faults in the engine management control unit
  • the plausibility of all the parameters.
Continue to Step 4 An error is detected in the control unitContinue according to the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
unreliable parametersContinue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
Lack of dialogue with the control unitRestore the connection between the engine management control unit and the diagnostic connector.
4HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socketCheck as described in test 1060D that the diesel pressure parameter is correct. Continue to Step 12 Pressure not correct Continue to Step 5
5LOW PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check as described in test 1060A that the pressure in the return pipe to the tank is under 1 bar Continue to Step 6 Pressure above maximum limit: return pipe to tank (front section) blocked) Repair the pipe (front section), if necessary replace it Op.   1040B54  , end of diagnosis
Pressure above maximum limit: return pipe to tank (rear section) blocked Repair the pipe (rear section), if necessary replace it Op.   1040B56
