2401114 - Introduction - FRONT SEATS

The structure of the front seats has been designed to support and complete the protection offered by the occupant protection system.Two metal bars, at the front and the back, under the front seat cushions, maintain the correct support for the occupant in a frontal impact and minimize the deformation of the seat in side impacts.The front pipe and the particular shape of the interlining of the base of the cushion prevent the passengers from sliding under the section of the seat belt known as the submarining effect.The tough hinges between the backrest and the base have been produced to ensure that the occupant is restrained during rear impacts at low speed and, in conjunction with light areas in the side panels, guarantee gradual, controlled absorption of the impact energy resulting from rear impacts at high speed. The seats are of primary importance in terms of comfort and safety: they are, in effect, the element which has to absorb the kinetic energy acquired by the body through the effect of stress round bends and acceleration/deceleration.There is a special structure in the front section of the front seats designed to prevent the body of the occupant from sliding forwards under their seat belt in the case of a violent frontal impact.This helps in limiting injuries to the abdomen and the femur as it reduces the forward acceleration of the occupant's body.The Fiat IDEA is equipped with modern devices for creating and maintaining lasting comfort which have been produced in conjunction with Prof. Dal Monte, the Director of the Department of Biomechanics at the CONI Institute of Sports Medicine:1) to enhance vibrational comfort and, above all, the absorb vibrations produced by hard road surfaces (e.g. tram lines, etc.) the seats on the IDEA are fitted, in the area supporting the ischiococcygeal glutean muscles, with efficient springs with a flexible pack produced using thin steel wires covered in plastic and secured to the perimeter frame through springs. 2) there is a modern support system on the IDEA to support the back in the lumbar region specially designed to adapt to the back and support it unfailingly thanks to the considerably extensive operation of the plates.3) the driver's seat on the IDEA is also fitted with height adjustment, with a vertical travel of 60 mm.The height is adjusted via a ratchet control lever with greatly reduced loads and is easy to use.The guides slide lengthwise. They are at a slight angle of 2° to correspond with the advance even if the seat is raised.The combination of a driver's seat that is height adjustable with height and axial adjustment of the steering wheel guarantees an optimum driving position for an extensive range of drivers. The adjustment of the backrest angle is the discontinuous type and is adjusted using a lever located in the area of the seat towards the interior of the passenger compartment which, in addition to adjusting the angle, also allows the folding of the passenger seat backrest to produce a support surface.Depending on the version, the adjustment of the lumbar support for the driver and the front passenger, is available either fitted as standard or as an optional extra, with a knob on the inside of the seat which regulates a mechanism which varies the backrest lumbar support in conjunction with the armrest.The front head restraints are fitted with a height adjustment device which is fixed in such a way as to allow an optimum, stable position in the various intermediate positions. the rear head restraints are also height adjustable (one position only conforming with ECE regulation 10/90).There are 3 head restraints for the rear seats to ensure the same level of safety and comfort for all the occupants: there are also 3 inertia reel seat belts;

The air bag module, seat belt fastened sensor and heat pad (if present) connectors are anchored to a connector bracket, anchored in turn to the seat structure. The bracket may be rotated forward by means of the anchorage clip to gain access to the connectors .Wording on the outside of the squab warns of the presence of an air bag beneath the trim [PR5580].If the air bag module, cable and seat trim are replaced, the new parts come with registration plates which should be detached and stuck on the seat base so that they can be easily read.
