The IDEA is fitted with a pedal
unit with a plastic mount that houses the brake and clutch pedals.
The clutch pedal is plastic.The brake pedal (steel), includes a device
that allows the pedal to collapse in the case of impact to limit
intrusion into the passenger compartment and injury to the lower
limbs.The chosen solution (pedal unit separate
from the power unit) permits the installation of a larger brake
servo (10').The accelerator pedal (plastic) is fitted
separately on a special mount and the accelerator control is electronic
(Drive by Wire system) on all engine versions.The accelerator pedal is fitted with two
built-in potentiometers (a main one and a safety back-up). These
send pedal movements to the control unit, which opens the throttle
by the required amount.A pedal/brake ratio of 3.6 combined with
aa 15'/16' pump ensures reduced pedal travel and allows brake servo
size to be exploited to the full. Braking is also smoother and more
gradual. Pedal arrangement has been optimised to
make the pedals more user-friendly by considering ideal ankle angle
and pedal spacing parameters. On versions with a robotised gearbox
and automatic transmission, the pedal unit does not include a clutch
release pedal because the function is performed automatically.
