Description

The car is fitted with an electronically-controlled safety system which, in the case of a front-end or side crash activates the safety devices. The front protection system includes dual front air bags (driver and passenger) with dual stage activation, front seat belts with pretensioners and load restricters, a supplementary decentralized sensor for detecting impact and a manual switch for disabling the passenger Air Bag. The side protection system consists of two window bags, housed in the side members under the roof; there are also two side bags, available as an option, in the front seat. The front protection system adopts the new activation logic known as the Smart 2 Air Bag which is capable of automatically adapting the activation parameters depending on the seriousness of the impact. The driver and passenger Air Bags are the dual activation stage type: when the impact is medium, the electronic control unit only operates the first activation stage for the Air Bags, preventing the intake of energy not needed for the protection of the occupant.Conversely, for very serious impacts, the control unit activates both stages in order to absorb the increased kinetic energy of the occupant before the impact against the steering wheel or the dashboard. In addition, an additional ECS (Early Crash Sensor) located near the bonnet lid lock; assists the electronic control unit in anticipating the intervention of the Air Bags compared with a conventional system so that the activation stage is completed even before the occupant starts to move forward towards the steering wheel or the dashboard. In addition, this sensor detects underbody impacts or stresses for which the activation of the Air Bags is not necessary as there is no risk to the occupants. The control unit is located under the centre console and is rigidly fixed to the bodyshell: in this way the deceleration sensors located inside it are close to the centre of gravity and detect deceleration for the entire vehicle accurately. The two front Air Bag modules have two stage operation: the first stage is for slight impacts and the second stage for more severe impacts. The driver's Air Bag module is located at the centre of the steering wheel; it is fitted on a tilting plate which enables the horn to be operated. The plate houses a metal container which holds the folded air bag and a gas generator that inflates the bag. A clock spring device allows the air bag module connection leads to turn with the steering wheel without the risk of breakage. The passenger Air Bag module is located in the dashboard, and is fixed directly to the vehicle crossmember by means of a special bracket. The passenger Air Bag can be manually deactivated via a special switch - which can be operated by a key: it is locatedin the upper dashboard compartment, on the passenger side. With the key in the OFF position, the control unit also controls the operation of the special 'passenger Air Bag disabled' warning light. The Side Bag protects the chest area and, together with the door panels, guarantees protection for the critical areas of the body such as the ribs and the abdomen. Its position on the seat always guarantees maximum effectiveness, irrespective of the position of the seat even if the occupant is not seated correctly, as the dynamics of opening of the bag minimises the risk of damage to the body caused by the impact with the bodyshell. The Window Bags are activated together with the Side Bags and place themselves between the occupant and the vehicle preventing the occupant's head from coming into contact with sharp areas such as the windows, pillars, etc.Since it extends from the front pillar to the luggage compartment, the Window Bag protects both the front and rear passengers; The window bag system is optimum thanks to the extensive surface and its capacity to support itself even in the absence of support; The pretensioners are incorporated in the front seat belt reel. The same logic which controls the Air Bags controls the activation of the seat belt pretensioners. The pretensioners have the function of recovering any belt slack in order to keep the occupant against the backrest from the very start of the impact, reducing movement inside the passenger compartment.

The control unit is self-diagnostic:

  • it detects and memorizes any faults
  • it recognizes the various components and the type of fault
  • it signals the onset of these faults via the special warning light
System activations following a particularly serious impact are memorized by the control unit. When the system self-diagnostic function detects a fault or an impact is detected the control unit sends a signal via the CAN for the Air Bag failure warning light located in instrument panel E50.Similarly, the passenger Air Bag disabled warning light and the seat belts not fastened warning light are lit up.: this warning light signals the failure of the driver to fasten their seat belt, coming on constantly from the key on; the warning light in the panel starts to flash and the buzzer in the instrument panel sounds intermittently if the speed of the vehicle exceeds 25 km/h or the distance travelled exceeds 500 m.
