Functional description

The engine control unit M10 monitors and controls the entire electronic ignition and injection system. The control unit M10 is supplied directly by the battery at pin 18 of connector A, via the line protected by maxifuse CENTR of B5 protected by fuse F20 of junction unit B1 . An ignition-operated power supply (INT/A) reaches pin 8 of connector A, via the line protected by fuse F16 of junction unit B1.

The main fuel injection relay J10 controls the entire system: it is supplied directly from the battery via the line of maxifuse B80; it is energized by a control signal (earth) coming from pin 9 of connector A of control unit M10, and thus sends a supply:

  • to pins 7 and 17 of control unit connector A and injectors N70 via a line protected by fuse B41 ;
  • the air flow meter K41 , fuel vapour recovery solenoid L10 , variable geometry control solenoid L15 , variable valve timing actuator N76 and Lambda probe K40 ; (all these lines are protected by fuse B40 ).
Fuel pump relay J15 is supplied directly from the battery via a line protected by maxifuse B80 . This is excited by a control signal (earth) from pin 3 of connector A of control unit M10 and supplies power to fuel pump N40 via fuse F3 of junction unit B1 . The pump is earthed via inertia switch I50 . In case of impact, this cuts off the circuit to prevent the danger of fuel delivery. Fuel pump relay J15 also supplies power to ignition coils A30 . The engine control unit M10 receives signals from the various sensors in order to monitor all engine service conditions. Rpm sensor K46 provides information on engine speed via a frequency signal sent to pins 22 and 32 of connector B of control unit M10 . These two signals are very low intensity and are therefore shielded. Timing sensor K47 is supplied from pin 29 of connector B of control unit M10 and sends a signal of corresponding frequency to pin 23 of control unit connector B. Engine temperature sender unit K36 receives a reference earth from pin 1 of connector B of control unit M10 and supplies a signal proportional to the coolant temperature to pin 5 of control unit connector B. The same sender unit also supplies information to the temperature gauge and warning light (  See E4010  INSTRUMENT PANEL ). Hot Lambda probe K40 provides control unit M10 with information on the correct composition of the air-fuel mixture. The signal is sent to pin 30 of connector B of M10 , while pin 21 provides a reference earth signal. Probe K40 is heated by a resistor in order to ensure it works efficiently even when cold. The resistor is supplied by the relay J10 and receives an earth signal from pin 8 of connector B of control unit M10 . Knock sensor K50 provides information on knock status via a frequency signal sent to pin 2 of connector B of control unit M10 . It receives a reference earth from pin 11 of connector B. The signals are very low intensity and are therefore shielded. The air flow meter K41 (supplied by the relay J10 ) receives a reference voltage from pin 1 of connector A of the control unit, and sends to pin 20 of connector A a signal proportional to the air flow. K41 also contains an air temperature sensor: the sensor reference earth is supplied by pin 29 of connector A of M10, while an air temperature signal is received by pin 30 of connector A. Control unit M10 controls the opening of individual injectors N70 via duty cycle signals produced by pins 6 (cyl. 1), 17 (cyl. 2), 16 (cyl. 3) and 7 (cyl. 4) of connector B of M10 . The injectors N70 receive a power supply to enable opening from main relay J10 . Control unit M10 also controls coils A30 via control signals (earth) for the coil primary windings, while the secondary winding sends a pulse to the spark plugs: from pins 38 and 10 of connector B for the cylinder pair 1-4 and from pins 9 and 37 of connector B of M10 for cylinders 2-3. The coil A30
