INTRODUCTION AND SETTING UP

Important warnings for usage and safe driving

The ICS makes the task of the driver easier with a more rational approach to the vehicle controls. In order not to create dangerous situations for oneself or others when using your ICS, pay attention to the following points:

  • the ICS system should be used with the full control of the vehicle; if in doubt, it is necessary to stop and carry out various operations,
  • the use mobile phones is prohibited in the vicinity of explosive substances.
The responsibility for road safety is always expected from the driver of the vehicle.
The Alfa Romeo navigation system makes it possible to reach one's destination, negotiating through traffic and following a route stored on the navigation CD.The Alfa Romeo navigation system takes into account all information relating road conditions when establishing the route, recommending the optimum journey. However, it does not take into account traffic conditions or sudden interruptions or any other problems.When carrying out each manoeuvre, the highway code should be followed, irrespective of the navigation system's advice. If you should stray from the recommended route, the ICS system will devise a new route and suggest it to you.

Ics: alfa romeo comfort and practicality

The ICS (Integrated Control System Alfa Romeo) is an integrated vehicle control and information system which can easily be used by either the driver or the passenger, which offers services which can be exploited using various devices, namely:

  • audio,
  • on board computer,
  • climate control system,
  • (video) viewer.

The system controls and integrates the following components:

  • telephone (optional)
  • navigator (optional)
  • CD reader (optional)
  • DSP amplifier (optional).
One interface is represented by the (multipurpose) viewer used for all the components included in the ICS. Another interface allows the user to receive extremely clear and structured auditory instructions according to the individual ICS equipment units.

The ICS system is available in three different national versions:

  • European; European radio, GSM telephone, external auto-scout,
  • USA; USA radio, external auto-scout,
  • Japanese: Japanese radio, external Japanese navigation
Multipurpose information viewer (video)The video interface (TFT viewer) is a module with a lighting unit integrated in the front panel.The video consists of a colour LCD and 5 inch size active matrix with the following

technical specifications:

  • resolution, 230 vertical pixel by 320 horizontal pixel (about 7.5 x 10.3 cm) and RGB (red, green, blue) line configuration;
  • analogue RGB interface (true colour);
  • back-light, type CFL 250 cd/m2 with white presentation;
  • surface with scratch-resistant and non-glare coating;
  • contrast, minimum value 50:1.

For optimum visibility of the viewer, there are two operating modes:

  • during the day it can be set according to the intensity of the light;
  • at night, with the "side lights" on, the colours used on the viewer can be adjusted.

It is possible to use the cursor to select the elements and items from the lists and activate the controls selected.The cursor is moved using the knob (13) on the front panel of the ICS, at the bottom right. By pressing the knob (13) gently, the selection element is activated.The main function buttons are (main) (audio) (tel) (nav) (trip) (clima)Irrespective of the ambient or level, it is possible, at any time, to move from one "main function" to another, simply by pressing the button concerned (MAIN ... CLIMA).One returns to the same point, at the same level, for the function left previously.It is possible to move from a lower page for a "main function" to the first page in the same ambient by pressing the "main function" button activated."return" selection elementTo move from one functions page to the previous page displayed, it is necessary to select "return".Cancel the list selectionIf a list is incorrectly selected, it can be corrected by pressing the "main function" button for the ambient in which you are working (MAIN ....... CLIMA) to return to the relevant first function page.Dimming function (dipped headlamps)The dark button (16) can be used to switch the ICS viewer on or off if it is unclear. By pressing the "main function" buttons (MAIN ...... CLIMA), the viewer will be lit up and the main function selected activated. By pressing the dark button (16) or the knob (13), the viewer will be lit up, displaying the page for the function displayed previously.By pressing all the other switches or adjusting the volume (6), the viewer will remain dark whilst the function is carried out.If the set limits are exceeded (e.g. speed limit) the limits screen will appear for around 3 seconds, followed by the darkened viewer again.Function of "correction" selection element and correction "c" field

To correct a selection, press the knob (13) for two different lengths of time:

  • for less than 1 second: to cancel the last imputs,
  • for more than 1 second: to cancel the entire contents of the input field.

Switching ics on/off and stand-by operation

Using the ignition keyThe ICS is usually switched on and off with the key in the ON position or the OFF position.If the ICS has been switched off by pressing the button on the volume knob (6), the volume knob (6) must be pressed to switch it on.Using the volume control (6)The ICS can also be switched on and off using the volume control (6).With the ignition key in the OFF position and using the volume control (6), the ICS switches itself off automatically after an hour to protect the battery.Stand-by operationThe stand-by operating condition corresponds to the viewer dark and the volume off.During operation and with the ignition key in the ON position, the ICS can be placed in the stand-by mode by pressing the volume control (6). In this condition, the operation of the system is not visible, the telephone remains ready to receive and, if the activated speed limit is exceeded, the appropriate warning is displayed.

To access the ICS again, proceed in one of the following ways:

  • press the volume control (6),
  • answer a phone call by pressing the receiver button (17) or by lifting the additional receiver,
  • press one of the main function buttons (MAIN ....... CLIMA),
  • press the map button (14),
  • press or turn the knob (13),
  • press the dark button (16),
  • insert the SIM card.

Ics and navigator equipment (anti-theft) code

The ICS system and the integrated navigation system are protected by an access code. The first time they are switched on, both the codes should be entered, with priority given to the ICS.If there is a break in the supply (e.g. battery replaced), the ICS code must be reintroduced. If one of the two components is replaced, both codes must be entered.To enter the codes, proceed as follows.Switch on the ICS.An invitation to enter the ICS code will be displayed.The ICS code to be entered consists of 4 figures which are selected and confirmed using the knob (13): the figures are selected by turning the knob and pressing it for confirmation. After having entered the ICS code the "confirmation" element should be selectged.From this moment on all the system functions are available (main screen, audio system, on board computer, climate control and telephone) except for the navigation system.After entering the ICS code, it is possible to enter the NAVI code in the same way (to enable the navigation system).To correct any input errors, the selector indicator must be positioned on "correct" by pressing the knob (13)

for the following lengths of time:

  • for less than 1 second: to cancel the last figure entered, - for more than 1 second: to cancel the entire contents of the input field.
The correct figure can then be entered.
(A): Characters available for entering code (B): ICS code input field (C): Selection elements Entering three codes incorrectly consecutively, will halt the system for around 10 minutes. A further 3 incorrect introductions will halt the sysem for around 10 minutes. The third series of inccorect introductions and the next trio of errors, will halt the system for around 60 minutes.In any case, the ICS system emergency call function always remains enabled, on condition the telephone has been fitted,
The ICS and NAVI codes are part of the system documentation and should be kept carefully away from the vehicle for safety reasons.

Ics maintenance

The ICS requires some attention which must be meticulously given in order to ensure perfect operation:

  • the monitor is sensitive to scratching, liquid detergents and UV rays,
  • fluids which penetrate inside could damage the equipment irreparably.
Advice for cleaningThe ICS should be cleaned regularly taking care to use a soft, clean, dry cloth.
If there is a fault with the ICS equipment it should never be opened, except by Alfa Romeo authorized, trained personnel. If necessary, seek assistance from the nearest Alfa Romeo Dealer. In the case of particularly low temperatures, the monitor only reaches the optimum brightness after it has been working for a certain length of time.

Updating the system software

The ICS system software can only be updated using CD-ROM Maps in the navigation device.
The system can be updted as soon as new versions of the ICS software and the navigation module software are available. The operation of loading the new software is carried out automatically when a new navigation CD-ROM is entered, even if the ignition key is not present.

The software updating stage can be recognized in two ways:

  • display of the signal tests, either on the MAIN screen on on the main navigation page,
  • display of a rectangle in the centre of the monitor during this process and indication that the loading process is in progress through its gradual filling. The two loading stages mean that the rectangle is displayed twice.
Each fault detected during the loading is shown under the rectangle.
No other system functions are available during the ICS software updating process.
Only the ICS functions are available during the updating of the navigation software.The software updating process should be carried out with the vehicle stationary, with no overhead obstructions (to locate at leas three satellites) to allow the current position to be determined quickly.The software updating process may take several minutes (up to twenty minutes).
