3308583 - B10 ENGINE DOES NOT START / UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES

The engine does not start. When the key is turned, the instruments light up, the starter motor turns, but the engine will not start.
Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
First check for presence of fuel in the tank, any intervention of the inertial switch, air cleaner and air intake system Continue to Step 1 No fuelRestore:
Inertia switch operatedRestore:
Air cleaner dirty or partially blocked Replace air filter Op.   1048A14
1CHECK I.E. AND CODE FAILURE WARNING LIGHTSAll OKProblems metOperation

Place the key in the ON position and check that:

  • the i.e. failure warning light comes on for about 4 seconds and then goes out
  • the CODE warning light comes on for less than one second and then goes out
Continue to Step 2 The i.e. failure warning light comes on and remains on See table   K50  I.E. FAILURE WARNING LIGHT ON
The CODE warning light comes on and remains on See table   K52  CODE FAILURE WARNING LIGHT ON
Both the warning lights come on and remain on See table   K56  I.E. WARNING AND CODE WARNING LIGHT BOTH ON
The i.e. failure warning light does not come on See table K53 I.E. FAILURE WARNING LIGHT OFF
The CODE warning light does not come on See table   K55  CODE FAILURE WARNING LIGHT OFF
2CHECKING WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socket.

Verify:

  • that there are no faults in the engine management control unit
  • the plausibility of all the parameters
Continue to Step 3 An error is detected in the control unitContinue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
Lack of dialogue with the control unit Restore the connection between the engine management control unit and the diagnostic connector ( See   E5050  DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT )
3FUEL FILTER CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Continue to Step 4 Presence of water, petrol, paraffin or dirt detected Clean tank and pipes and replace filter element Op.   1044B20
4CHECK RETURN LOW PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the pressure between the twin manifold and the return pipe to the tank: See Test   1060A  Check low pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 5 Pressure over 1 bar: the return circuit to the tank is cloggedRemove any blockages in the return pipe or the cage for the low pressure pump immersed in the tank
5CHECK ON DELIVERY LOW PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check filter between diesel filter and 'radialjet' high pressure pump See Test   1060B  Check low pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 6 Leaks in circuitEliminate fuel leaks from pipes/low pressure circuit connections
Pressure under 1.8 bar or difference in pressure between Test B and Test A less than 1 bar Replace valve on diesel filter mounting Op.   1044B16  Replace the fuel pump Op.   1040A70
Pressure over 3.5 bar Replace valve on diesel filter mounting Op.   1044B16
6INJECTOR LEAK TESTAll OKProblems metOperation
Check whether diesel is leaking from the injectors: See Test   1060C  Check high pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 7 One or more injectors leaking Replace injector(s) Op.   1060F10
7HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check diesel pressure parameter measured with diagnostic instrument: See Test   1060D  Check high pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 8 Pressure reading below 150 bar Replace high pressure pump Op.   1060E10
Leaks in circuitEliminate fuel leaks from high pressure circuit pipes/connectors
8CHECKING TIMINGAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the engine timing is correct Op.   0510A20  Continue to Step 9 Timing not correct Restore the correct engine timing Op.   1032B14
9HECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persistsSearch for the fault starting from another symptom'
