3308586 - B16 ENGINE STARTS WITH DIFFICULTY'

The engine, especially when cold, starts with difficulty only after repeated attempts. When the key is turned, the instruments light up, the starter motor turns, but the engine has trouble starting.
Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Turn the ignition on and check that the i.e. failure warning light comes on for about 4 seconds and then goes out Continue to Step 1 The i.e. warning light comes on and remains on See table   K50  I.E. FAILURE WARNING LIGHT ON
The i.e. failure warning light does not come on See table K53 I.E. FAILURE WARNING LIGHT OFF
1CHECKING AIR CIRCUITAll OKProblems metOperation

Check, in order:

  • the condition of the air filter
  • the condition and seal of the air supply circuit
Continue to Step 2 Filter dirty or partially blocked Replace air filter Op.   1048A14
Circuit component damagedReplace component (See Assembly 1048A)
2CHECKING WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socket.

Verify:

  • that there are no faults in the engine management control unit
  • the plausibility of all the parameters
Continue to Step 3 An error is detected in the control unitContinue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
Lack of dialogue with the control unit Restore the connection between the engine management control unit and the diagnostic connector ( See   E5050  DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT )
3FUEL FILTER CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the operation of the fuel filter Continue to Step 4 Presence of water, petrol, paraffin or dirt detected Clean tank and pipes and replace filter element Op.   1044B20
4CHECK ON DIESEL FILTER HEATERAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the operation of the diesel heater on the filter: See Test   1044DA  Check fuel heater power supply Continue to Step 5 Fuel pre-heating not working Replace the fuel heater Op.   1044D10
5CHECK RETURN LOW PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the pressure between the twin manifold and the return pipe to the tank: See Test   1060A  Check low pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 6 Pressure over 1 bar: the return circuit to the tank is cloggedRemove any blockages in the return pipe or the cage for the low pressure pump immersed in the tank
6CHECK ON DELIVERY LOW PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check filter between diesel filter and 'radialjet' high pressure pump See Test   1060B  Check low pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 7 Leaks in circuitEliminate fuel leaks from pipes/low pressure circuit connections
Pressure under 1.8 bar or difference in pressure between Test B and Test A less than 1 bar Replace valve on diesel filter mounting Op.   1044B16  Replace the fuel pump Op.   1040A70
Pressure over 3.5 bar Replace valve on diesel filter mounting Op.   1044B16
7INJECTOR LEAK TESTAll OKProblems metOperation
Check whether diesel is leaking from the injectors: See Test   1060C  Check high pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 8 One or more injectors leaking Replace injector(s) Op.   1060F10
8HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check diesel pressure parameter measured with diagnostic instrument: See Test   1060D  Check high pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 9 Pressure reading less than 150 bar at over 200 engine rpm Replace high pressure pump Op.   1060E10
Pressure reading less than 150 bar at under 200 engine rpm Replace battery Op.   5530B10  and repeat See Test   1060D  Check high pressure fuel circuit
Leaks in circuitEliminate fuel leaks from high pressure circuit pipes/connectors
9CHECKING VALVE CLEARANCESAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the valve tappet clearance is correct. Op.   1036H14  Continue to Step 10 Clearance not correct Restore the correct valve clearance. Op.   1036H18
10CHECKING CYLINDER COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out the cylinder compression test Op.   0510A10  Continue to Step 11 Compression values not correctRestore the correct cylinder compression, for example checking the seal of the cylinders (see OVERHAULING ENGINE, Subassembly 1004)
11HECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persistsSearch for the fault starting from another symptom'
