3308743 - X01 EXCESSIVE FUEL CONSUMPTION

The engine appears to be running smoothly, but the fuel consumption is higher than previously recorded during the life of the vehicle.
The consumption data in the vehicle technical documentation has been defined during the course of homologation tests in accordance with directive 93/116/CE. These tests simulate an urban cycle and an 'average' extra-urban cycle and therefore may not be indicative as consumption depends very much on the style of driving.
Results of the tests
1LEAKS CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Visually check for fuel leaks from the tank, fuel filler, multi-function valve, etc. Continue to Step 2 Leaks detectedEliminate leaks and/or replace faulty components
2FUEL FILTER CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the operation of the fuel filter Continue to Step 3 Presence of water, petrol, paraffin or dirt detected Clean tank and pipes and replace filter element Op.   1044B20
3CHECKING AIR CIRCUITAll OKProblems metOperation

Check, in order:

  • the condition of the air filter
  • the condition and seal of the air supply circuit
Check the fuel supply circuit, low pressure side: if necessary, use the diagnostic equipment (Examiner) to measure the pressure values
Continue to Step 4 Air cleaner dirty or partially blocked Replace air filter Op.   1048A14
Circuit component damagedReplace component (See Assembly 1048A)
4CHECKING WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socket.

Verify:

  • that there are no faults in the engine management control unit
  • the plausibility of all the parameters
Continue to Step 5 An error is detected in the control unitContinue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
Lack of dialogue with the control unit Restore the connection between the engine management control unit and the diagnostic connector See   E5050  DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT
5CHECK EXHAUST PIPEAll OKProblems metOperation
Check for blockages in the exhaust pipe Continue to Step 6 Exhaust pipe blockedReplace the component involved
6CHECKING VALVE CLEARANCESAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the valve tappet clearance is correct. Op.   1036H14  Continue to Step 7 Clearance not correct Restore the correct valve clearance. Op.   1036H18
7CHECKING TIMINGAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the engine timing is correct Op.   0510A20  Continue to Step 8 Timing not correct Restore the correct engine timing Op.   1032B14
8CHECKING CYLINDER COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out the cylinder compression test Op.   0510A10  Continue to Step 9 Compression values not correct Restore the correct cylinder compression, for example, by checking the seal of the injectors Op.   1056B70  and cylinders (see OVERHAULING ENGINE, Subassembly 1004)
9HECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persistsSearch for the fault starting from another symptom'
