184000405 - B13 ENGINE STARTS WITH DIFFICULTY'

The engine, especially when cold, starts with difficulty only after repeated attempts. When the key is turned, the instruments light up as normal, the starter motor turns, but the engine has difficulty in starting.
Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation

Check, in order:

  • that there are no obstructions in the air filter;
  • the condition of the air intake circuit
  • seal of the diesel pipes;
  • that there is no petrol, water, paraffin or dirt in the diesel filter
  • the correct operation of the exhaust pipes
Continue to Step 1Air intake circuit componentRepair or replace the defective component
Filter blockedReplace the air filter Op. 1048A10
Filter blockedReplace the diesel filter cartridge Op. 1044B20
Leaks from the diesel pipesRetighten the pipes, and if necessary replace them.
Presence of water, petrol, paraffin or dirt detectedClean the tank and pipes and replace the diesel filter cartridge Op. 1044B20
Obstruction in the exhaust systemReplace the damaged system component
1CHECK WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socket

Check:

  • for errors in the control unit
  • plausibility of all the parameters
Continue to Step 2An error is detected in the control unitContinue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
unreliable parametersContinue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
2CHECK FLOW METERAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the condition of the flow meter and the pipes connected to it.Continue to Step 3Pipes damagedRepair the pipe; if necessary replace it
3EGR SOLENOID VALVE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check it is working properly. without sticking or intermediate stops. for the solenoid valve.(This can be done by removing the valve from its position and releasing it from the pipes, leaving the electrical connection, however, in place; at this point, operate the active diagnosis stage using the EXAMINER to check that it is working properly)Continue to Step 4Solenoid valve damagedRepair the solenoid valve and, if necessary, replace it Op. 1080C24
4HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment to the diagnostic socket.Check as described in the test See Test 1060D Check high pressure fuel circuit that the diesel pressure parameter is correctContinue to Step 12Pressure too highContinue to Step 5
Pressure too lowReplace the pressure regulator Op. 1060E50 then continueContinue to Step 5
5CHECK ON RETURN LOW PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check as described in the test See Test 1060A Low return fuel pressure circuit check that the pressure in the return pipe to the tank is under 1 barContinue to Step 6Pressure above maximum limit: return pipe to tank blockedRepair the pipe; if necessary replace it
6LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check as described in the test See Test 1060B Low fuel pressure supply circuit check that the diesel pressure between the filter and pressure pump is between 2 and 3 barContinue to Step 12Pressure below minimum limit or above maximum limitContinue to Step 7
7LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Close the return pipe downstream of the low pressure regulator valve, located in the fuel filter cover, using the special tool and carry out the test See Test 1060B Low fuel pressure supply circuit check again with the pipe closed, checking that the filter outlet pressure remains below 2 barContinue to Step 8Pressure rises to 5 bar: blocked pressure regulation valve on filter supportReplace the diesel filter cover Op. 1044B16
8LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the difference in pressure upstream and downstream of the filter is less than 1 barContinue to Step 9Difference in pressure greater than 1 barReplace the diesel filter cartridge Op. 1044B20
9LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the supply pump pressure at the filter inlet is over 2.2 barContinue to Step 12Pressure below 2 barContinue to Step 10
10LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Measure the difference in pressure between electric pump outlet and filter inlet, checking that it is less than 0.3 barContinue to Step 11Difference in pressure greater than 0.3 barReplace the pipe
11LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check as described in the test See Test 1040AA Check supply voltage' and absorption current' that the pump's supply voltage is 12V and that the absorbed current is between 2 and 10 amps.Continue to Step 12Voltage < 12 VCheck electric wiring See E5050 DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT
Current > 10 Amp: pump defectiveReplace the fuel pump assembly Op. 1040A70
Current < 2 Amp.: pump blockedReplace the fuel pump assembly Op. 1040A70 and clean the fuel tank
12CORRECT OPERATION CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Replace the DRV high-pressure regulator and check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persistsContinue to Step 13
13CORRECT OPERATION CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Replace the pressure pump and check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persistsContinue to Step 14
14CHECK ON CYLINDER COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out the cylinder compression testContinue to Step 16Cylinder compression insufficientContinue to Step 15
15CHECK ON CAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out R.R. on head to check the valve sealCheck the condition of the cylinders/piston ringsContinue to Step 16Insufficient valve sealOverhaul the cylinder head Op. 1016E10
Cylinders/piston rings wornRepair the leak
16CHECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persists: control unit faultyReplace engine management control unit Op. 1060G80 Search for the fault starting from another symptom'
