Functional description

The control unit for the Air Bag system M60 is controlled by the ignition (INT) at pin 15 from the line protected by fuse B32 . Pin 24 is connected to the specific earth C50 , like pin 30, on the 'complete' versions, i.e. those with a passenger Air Bag. (on versions with a driver's Air Bag only, pin 30 is not connected).

When an impact of a set severity (determined by the control software) is detected, the control unit sends control signals to set off the modules:

  • to driver's Air Bag Q9 , via the steering wheel clockspring Q10 (from pins 1 and 2):
  • to the outer passenger Air Bag Q12 and the inner one Q13 (from pins 13 and 14 and 3 and 4, respectively);
Pins 5 and 8 are connected to the passenger Air Bag disabling switch H75 . When the system self-diagnostic function detects a fault or an impact is detected, control unit M60 sends a signal -from pin 13 - to the Air Bag fault warning light located in instrument panel E50 .
the 'Air Bag fault' warning light is a so-called 'intelligent' warning light: thanks to a special operating circuit inside the instrument, it comes on, not only to signal a fault in the Air Bag system, but also if there is no connection or a short circuit to earth in the circuit which connects the instrument with the control unit.
When the passenger Air Bag is disabled, the control unit M60 sends a signal, from pin 20, to the 'passenger Air Bag deactivation' warning light, located in the instrument panel E50 . This is an earth signal and makes the warning light come on because the instrument panel E50 supply is controlled by the ignition (INT) from the line protected by fuse F1 of the junction unit B1 . Self-diagnostic data may be read by connecting the unit to connector R10 : this receives signals from pin 9 of control unit M60 through the appropriate tester line.
