2888324 - B16 ENGINE STARTS WITH DIFFICULTY'

The engine, especially when cold, starts with difficulty only after repeated attempts. When the key is turned, the instruments light up, the starter motor turns, but the engine has trouble starting.
Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation

Preliminarily check:

  • that there is no water, other fluid or dirt in the fuel tank
  • the seal of the fuel pipes and connectors
Continue to Step 1The i.e. warning light comes on and remains on See table   K50  I.E. FAILURE WARNING LIGHT ON
Presence of dirt in the fuel tankClean the fuel tank Op. 1040A24
Fuel pipes damagedRenew or replace the pipes (see Assembly 1040B)
1AIR CIRCUIT CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Check, in order:

  • the condition of the air filter
  • the condition and seal of the air supply circuit
Continue to Step 2Air cleaner dirty or partially blockedReplace the air filter Op.   1048A14
Circuit component damagedReplace the component (see Assembly 1048A)
2CHECK WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the diagnostic socket

Check:

  • that there are no faults in the engine management control unit
  • plausibility of all the parameters
Continue to Step 3An error is detected in the control unitContinue according to the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
Lack of dialogue with the control unitRestore the connection between the engine management control unit and the diagnostic connector ( See   E5050  DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT )
3FUEL FILTER CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the operation of the fuel filterContinue to Step 4Presence of water, petrol, paraffin or dirt detected Clean the tank and pipes and replace the filter element Op.   1044B20

Check the operation of the diesel heater on the filter:Continue to Step 5Fuel pre-heating not workingReplace the fuel heater Op.   1044D10
5CHECK RETURN LOW PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the pressure between the manifold and the return pipe to the tank: See Test   1060A  Check low pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 6Pressure over 1bar: the return circuit to the tank is cloggedEliminate any blockages in the return pipe or in the cage for the low pressure pump immersed in the tank
6CHECK DELIVERY LOW PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the pressure between diesel filter and high pressure pump See Test   1060B  Check low pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 7Leaks in circuitEliminate fuel leaks from low pressure circuit pipes/connectors
Pressure less than 1.8 bar or difference in pressure between Test B and Test A less than 1 barReplace the fuel pump Op.   1040A70
Pressure over 3.5 barReplace valve on diesel filter mounting Op. 1044B16
7FUEL INJECTOR LEAK TESTAll OKProblems metOperation
Check injectors for diesel leaks: See Test   1060C  Check high pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 8Leak detected from one or more injectorsReplace injector(s) Op.   1060F10
8HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check diesel pressure parameter measured using diagnostic instrument: See Test   1060D  Check high pressure fuel circuit Continue to Step 9Pressure reading below 150 barReplace high pressure pump Op.   1060E10
Leaks in circuitEliminate fuel leaks from high pressure circuit pipes/connectors
9VALVE CLEARANCE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the valve tappet clearance is correct. Op.   1036H14  Continue to Step 10Clearance not correctRestore the correct valve clearance. Op.   1036H18
10CYLINDER COMPRESSION CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out the cylinder compression test Op.   0510A10  Continue to Step 11Compression values not correctRestore the correct cylinder compression, e.g by checking the seal of the injectors Op.   1060F10  and the cylinders if necessary
11CHECKING CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
