Rotate the crankshaft using the tool fitted previously until cylinders no. 1 and no. 4 are at B.D.C.
To facilitate crankshaft rotation, remove one spark plug for each cylinder.
5. Undo the bolts (5a) and remove the big end bearing caps (5b) with the bearing shells (5c) of cylinders no. 1 and no. 4.Do the same to remove the big end bearing caps of cylinders no. 2 and no. 3.
1. Remove the tool.

2. Undo the bolts (2a) and remove the main bearing caps (2b) complete with bearing shells (2c).3. Remove the crankshaft.4. Remove the half-bearings.5. Remove the thrust washers.6. Remove the big end bearing shells.
Refitting ( Removing ) Visually inspect the condition of the main and big end bearing shells and, if necessary, replace them.Record the thickness of the main bearing halves.

MeasurementValue
-Crankshaft bearing thickness (mm)Category B1.839 ÷ 1.843
Category C1.842 ÷ 1.846
Class A1.836 ÷ 1.840
Record the thickness of the main bearing halves.

MeasurementValue
-Crankpin thickness (mm)Category B1.530 ÷ 1.534
Category C1.533 ÷ 1.537
Classe A1.527 ÷ 1.531
Measure the clearance between main journals and bearing halves and crankpins and bearing halves using Plastic Gauge.

MeasurementValue
-Main journal clearance (mm)crankshaft main journals0.031 ÷ 0.051

MeasurementValue
-Big end bearing clearance (mm)crankshaft big end bearings0.036 ÷ 0.056
If the clearance is not within specified values, replace the main and/or connecting rod bearing halves as indicated in  - 1004E20  engine - dismantle and re-build following operation 1004e10 - wash and check dismantled parts - re-fit cylinder head and oil sump - does not include repairs to cylinder head and auxiliary unit .The clearance between bearing halves and pins must be within specified values.1. Refit the big end bearing shells in their seats.2. Refit the main bearing halves.3. Place the crankshaft back in its housing.4. Refit the 3 main bearings and the thrust half-washers.5. Refit the main bearing caps (5a) complete with haf-bearings (5b).
The bearing caps are numbered progressively (from zero to four starting from the front of the engine) which defines their fitting position.
6. Tighten the bearing cap bolts to the recommended torque.

Check that the crankshaft end float is within the recommended values using a magnetic base fitted with a dial gauge.

MeasurementValue
-Crankshaft end float (mm)0.059 ÷ 0.221
If the end float of the crankshaft is not within the recommended values, when refitting, reface the seat in the cylinder block and use suitable oversize thrust washers. 1. Refit the flywheel side oil seal (1a) in its seating and tighten the bolts (1b) to the specified torque.
