3360340 - S16 RUMOROSITA' (scricchiolio/cigolio) sospensioni ANTERIORI

Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, creaking can be heard coming from the front suspension. This fault diagnosis can only be carried out after  See table S15  RUMOROSITA' in condizioni di marcia. Carry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any necessary operations on the appropriate side only
Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Having carried out the road test during the See table   S15  RUMOROSITA' in condizioni di marcia , a creaking noise was noticed coming from the front.Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occursEnd of diagnosisThe noise is produced whilst steering, even with the vehicle stationaryContinue to Step 1
The noise is produced whilst steering, even with the vehicle stationaryContinue to Step 2
1MOVING MC PHERSON ELEMENTS CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber upper bufferEnd of diagnosisThe buffer is looseTighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer no longer moves
2DUST COVER CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the dust cover is not rubbing against the shock absorber casing, by moving it pressing and releasing it above the shock absorber casingContinue to Step 3It is rubbingReplace the end of travel buffer
3END OF TRAVEL BUFFER CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the end of travel buffer is correctly fitted in its seat, by carrying out the See Test   4410AA  Verifica corretto montaggio tampone di fine corsa su ammortizzatore anteriore Continue to Step 4End of travel buffer not correctly fittedRefit the buffer correctly
4CHECKS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENTAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that there are no pipes, cables, guards in the engine compartment that could produce interference if the engine movesContinue to Step 5Components incorrectly positionedReposition the components correctly
5UNDER FLOOR CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Position the vehicle on a two column lift and raise it.Check that the pipes or heat shields under the floor are not the cause of any noiseContinue to Step 6Pipes or heat shields not correctly fastenedRestore the correct fixing
6THRUST WASHERS AND BUSHES CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that there are no signs of rubbing between the suspension arm thrust washers and bushesContinue to Step 7There are signs of rubbingLubricate the elements with graphite
7ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the anti-roll bar is not faulty See Test   4410CA  Verifiche sulla barra stabilizzatrice

In particular:

  • That the anti-roll bar is correctly positioned in relation to the vehicle centre line
  • That there is no wear of the paint at the contact points between the bar and the track control arms/shock absorbers
  • The condition of the flexible mounting in the contact area with the bar
  • Fastenings to torque between the bar and chassis
  • Fastenings to torque between the bar and shock absorber mounting connecting rords
Continue to Step 8 Tightenings not to torqueRestore the correct tightening
Bar incorrectly positioned Replace the anti-roll bar Op.   4410C10
Wear of the paint at the contact points (rubbing between bar-shock absorber or bar-suspension arm) Replace the anti-roll bar Op.   4410C10
Signs of tearing or damage to the flexible mounting Replace the anti-roll bar Op.   4410C10
8SPRING/SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the mountings securing the suspension to the bodyshell (at the shock absorber turrets) do not show signs of wear or rubbing. The shock absorber must be removed in order to check this condition Op.   4410A12  .Also check that the positioning and fitting of the semi-corner unit (spring-shock absorber assembly) is correct.Check that there are no signs of rubbing on the suspension spring at its supports. Also check that the spring does not show signs of wear
If the spring shows signs of abrasions, its mechanical properties could deteriorate as a result of oxidation
End of diagnosisSemi-corner positioning or fitting incorrectRefit/reposition the components correctly
Signs of tearing/damage to the shock absorber mountingsReplace the components making sure they are correctly positioned
Spring wornReplace the shock absorber spring Op.   4410A12
Signs of rubbing between the spring and its supportsRefit correctly
