3363848 - Introduction - STEERING

CAUTION

If the EPAS unit needs to be changed, replace the entire unit (including the intermediate shaft) unless the intermediate shaft alone needs changing. In any case, the intermediate shaft must be removed from the vehicle together with the EPAS unit in order to remove and re-install the shaft.
To prevent damage to the intermediate shaft, do not remain the main EPAS unit until the bolt has been removed and the fork connecting the steering box and intermediate shaft has been taken out.
When fitting a new part, do not turn the EPAS unit shafts until the operation is complete.

WARNINGS

All the operations must be carried out with the utmost attention and care to avoid damaging the components.Prevent brake-clutch fluid coming into contact with painted parts; If this should happen, wash immediately with water. Before any interventions on electrical components, including battery disconnection, make sure that the ignition is off ('STOP' position). In order to release parts which are sticking, tap lightly using an aluminium or lead hammer for ferrous materials, and a wooden or resin hammer for light alloy parts.During dismantling, check that parts which have to be marked carry reference marks. When refitting, lubricate the parts, where necessary, to prevent sticking or seizing during the initial operating period. During refitting, it is essential to observe the tightening torques and adjustment data.During each refitting, replace the gaskets, oil seals, spring washers, safety plates, self-locking nuts, pre-treated bolts and all components which have deteriorated. The replacement of removed assemblies or components should be carried out using genuine spare parts only: this is the only way that the interchangeability and perfect operation of the various components can be guaranteed.Always check any part of the steering that has been subject to (or may have been subject to) impact (e.g. following an accident). Replace all damaged parts or parts assumed to be damaged (note that the only part of the EPAS unit that can be replaced individually is the intermediate shaft).Check for any play or vibration in any part of the steering or steering mechanism and correct immediately.Do not use the steering system if it is broken or damaged. When replacing parts, only use original parts and follow the installation instructions carefully.Do not change the shape of any steering component when hot or cold.Take care when handling the EPAS because the outer casing may reach a temperature of 85 degrees centigrade following repeated manoeuvres at full load, e.g. parking or repeated operations at low speed).Failure to turn the ignition off while servicing with the wheel raised may cause physical damage due to electrical activation of the EPAS. To eliminate this potential risk, the steering wheel must be locked with the wheels straight ahead and the ignition key removed. If this is not possible because the key needs to be in the ON position or the engine must be running, remove the EPAS fuse before carrying out any other operation.
Wait at least 20 seconds after switching off the engine before disconnecting the battery, to allow the electric steering device to complete its deactivation procedure.
