The vehicle is equipped with an electronic control system that governs the acivation of specific containment devices in the event of frontal or side impact.The frontal protection system includes: Front driver and passenger air bags with dual stage activation, one driver side knee air bag, front seat belts with pretensioner and load limiter, seat belts fastened sensors (passenger side seat is fitted with a presence sensor SBR), two supplementary decentred crash detection sensors on the front upper beam (near the headlamps) and a manual passenger airbag disablement switch.The side protection system consists of two curtain bags housed in the under-roof rails, two impact sensors on the central pillars and two side bags on the front seats.The rear protection system consists of two air bags housed in the rear seat side trims, two pretensioners (on the seat belt reel) and a manual rear airbag disablement switch installed under the bracket supporting the parcel rack.The front protection system features new Smart Air Bag activation software that automatically adapts activation parameters according to impact severity and whether the seat belts are being worn.Driver and passenger front airbags feature two-stage activation: when the impact is of moderate severity, the electronic control unit controls only the first airbag activation stage to avoid emitting unnecessary energy for the occupant''s protection.Conversely, in the case of very severe impact, the control unit activates both stages almost simultaneously to absorb most of the kinetic energy from the occupant''s body before it strikes the steering wheel or dashboard.Impact severity also determines whether or not the driver''s side knee bag is activated.A supplementary ECS “Early Crash Sensor” on the front beam near the bonnet lock also helps the electronic control unit to operate more quickly than a conventional system so that the airbag activation stage is comleted before the occupant''s body begins to move towards the steering wheel or dashboard. This also increases the safety margin for underbody impact where air bag activation is not required.The control unit is located in the middle of the facia and is secured rigidly to the body: in this way the deceleration sensors located inside the unit are near the centre of gravity and detect the deceleration for the entire vehicle accurately.The Air Bag module is fitted in the centre of the steering wheel. it is fitted on a rocker plate that allows the horn to be operated. The plate houses a metal container that contains the folded bag and the gas generation device that inflates the bag.A clock spring allows the connecting cables for the Air Bag module to follow the rotation of the steering wheel without danger of breaking.The driver side knee bag is located under the steering column where the driver''s knees are positioned.The passenger air bag may be deactivated manually by means of a switch that can be operated by a manual backup key inside the TEG (remote controlled electronic key). This switch is located on the outside of the dashboard and is accessible only with the passenger door open.With the key OFF the control unit also controls activation of a special "passenger air bag disabled" warning light.The side bag protects the chest area and also - together with the door panels - protects critical areas of the body such as the ribs and abdomen.Its position on the seat always assures maximum efficacy, regardless of seat position, even if the seat occupant is not seated correctly. this is because the bag opening movements minimise the risk of damage to the body caused by impact with the body.The window bags are activated together with the sidebags and interpose themselvers between the occupant and the vehicle to prevent the head coming into contact with highly intrusive objects such as glass, pillars etc.Because the window bags extend from the front pillar to the luggage compartment, they protect front and rear passengers. The window bag system offers the best performance due to the broad area covered and their ability to be self-supporting even without a backing.The front seat belts with pretensioner and load limiter serve the purpose of taking up any slack in the seat belt strap and restraining the occupant to the vehicle from the first moment of impact to reduce overall occupant movement inside the passenger compartment. Activation of the seat belt pretensioners is controlled by the same strategy as the air bags.The pretensioners are applied to the buckles and then the seat to obtain an additional restraing function in conjunction with the seat structure.The seat belt fastened sensors in the front belt buckles activate an alarm warning light on the panel and also a buzzer to allow the control unit to adapt airbag activation as appropriate and prevent activation of the pretensioners (that would only incur additional vehicle repair costs since the belts are unfastened).The passenger presence sensor (SBR) on the passenger seat prevents the transmission of unnecessary signals if the seat is empty.Like the front side bags, the rear side bags are chest bags and guarantee the protection of critical areas of the body together with the door panels. Their installation on the sides of the seat backrest always ensures maximum protection.The rear pretensioners are integral with the seat belt reel. Activation of the seat belt pretensioners is controlled by the same strategy as the air bags.When the rear side bags are present, the vehicle disables them since it is equipped with a second manual deactivation switch located under the parcel rack brackets. Their deactivation is indicated by the "rear sidebag deactivation" warning light lighting up on the instrument panel (not the same as the light for the front passenger).The control unit is equipped with an autodiagnostic function:- it detects and stores faults;- it recognises the various components and the fault type;- it indicates the onset of faults by means of the special warning light.The activation of the system following a particularly serious impact is memorized by the control unit.When the system autodiagnostic function detects a fault or an impact is recorded, the control unit sends a signal, via the CAN, for the Air Bag fault warning light located in the instrument panel.Via the CAN network, it turns on the passenger air bag disablement warning light (by means of the switch or passenger presence sensor), the seat belt unfastened warning light (from a sensor on the front pretensioner) and the rear side bag disablement warning light (from a switch).For more details,See descriptions 5550C DIRECTION INDICATORS/HAZARD WARNING LIGHTSThe system control unit supply lines are protected by a fuse in the junction unit under the dashboard.
