STEPCHECK TO BE PERFORMEDRESOLUTION IF THE CHECK IS NOT OK
1Connect the diagnostic instrument in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to Pin 1 and the negative earthed to Pin A4 of the steering lock control unit    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)the direct voltage reading should be 12 Volt.Restore wiring continuity    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK
2Insert a key in the ignition and turn to STOP.Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin A6    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed and read a battery voltage of approximately 12 Volts.Move on to Step 4Move on to Step 3
3Check for wiring continuity between Pin 12 of the ignition device    See H003 IGNITION DEVICEand control unit Pin A6    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and repair if necessary    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCKThe test can be considered overContinue as instructed in the    See Test 5520AA CHECK ON IGNITION SWITCH EFFICIENCY
4Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin B5    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed.Turn the ignition ON and check for a voltage of approximately 12 Volts.Move on to Step 6Continue as instructed in the    See Test 5520AA CHECK ON IGNITION SWITCH EFFICIENCY
5Check for wiring continuity between Pin 6 of the ignition device    See H003 IGNITION DEVICEand control unit Pin B5    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and repair if necessary    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCKThe test can be considered overContinue as instructed in the    See Test 5520AA CHECK ON IGNITION SWITCH EFFICIENCY
6Turn the ignition key OFF.Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin C5    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed.Depress the brake pedal.Turn the ignition key to START.Check for a battery voltage signal of 12 Volts.Return the key to ON and check for a battery voltage signal of approximately 0 voltsMove on to Step 8Move on to Step 7
7Check for wiring continuity between Pin 5 of the ignition device    See H003 IGNITION DEVICEand control unit Pin C5    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and repair if necessary    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCKThe test can be considered overContinue as instructed in the    See Test 5520AA CHECK ON IGNITION SWITCH EFFICIENCY
8Turn the ignition key OFF.Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin C6    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed.Depress the brake pedalTurn the key to START. Check for a voltage signal of approximately 0 Volts.When the key is returned to START, the voltage should be 12 Volts.Move on to Step 10Move on to Step 9
9Check for wiring continuity between Pin 11 of the ignition device    See H003 IGNITION DEVICEand control unit Pin C6    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and repair if necessary    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCKThe test can be considered overContinue as instructed in the    See Test 5520AA CHECK ON IGNITION SWITCH EFFICIENCY
10Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin B1    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed and read a battery voltage of approximately 12 Volts.Replace the steering lock node    Op. 5580E17 STEERING LOCK - R.R
11Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin C8    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed and read a battery voltage of approximately 12 Volts.Replace the steering lock node    Op. 5580E17 STEERING LOCK - R.R
12Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin C4    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed.Press the brake pedal and the battery voltage reading should be 12 Volts.Release the brake pedal and the voltage reading should be 0 volts.Move on to Step 15Move on to Step 13
13Check for wiring continuity between brake pedal switch Pin 4    See I030 BRAKE PEDAL SWITCHand control unit Pin C4    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and repair if necessary    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCKThe test can be considered overCheck the power supply is correct to the brake pedal switch and restore if necessary.Move on to Step 14
14Check the diagnostic instrument in parameter mode to ensure the brake pedal switch is operating correctly.Replace the switch    Op. 1060G38 BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH - R.R
15Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin C7    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed.Press the brake pedal and the battery voltage reading should be 0 Volts.Release the brake pedal and the voltage reading should be 12 volts.Move on to Step 18Move on to Step 16
16Check for wiring continuity between brake pedal switch Pin 4    See I030 BRAKE PEDAL SWITCHand control unit Pin C4    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and repair if necessary    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCKThe test can be considered overCheck the power supply is correct to the brake pedal switch and restore if necessary.Move on to Step 17
17Check the diagnostic instrument in parameter mode to ensure the brake pedal switch is operating correctly.Replace the switch    Op. 1060G38 BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH - R.R
18Connect the diagnostic tester in Voltmeter mode with the positive probe to control unit Pin B4    See M089 STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (NBS)and negative earthed.Depress the brake pedal.Press the gear selection lever button, move the lever to different positions and check the voltage values are as shown in the following table:

  • lever to P, 0 V
  • lever to R, 12 V
  • lever to N, 0 V
  • lever to D, 12 V
Start-up must be possible in positions P and N but disabled in the other positions.The test can be considered over

19Check for wiring continuity between Pin 1 of the automatic transmission solenoid unit    See L050 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SOLENOID VALVESand Pin B4 of the steering lock and repair if necessary    See E7065 ELECTRIC STEERING LOCKReplace the gearbox solenoid unit    Op. 2130B39 GEAR SELECTION SOLENOID UNIT R R WITH SOLENOID UNIT COVER REMOVED
