194004006 - INTRODUCTION - ENGINE

ATTENTION

All the operations should be carried out taking great care to avoid personal injury. The engine compartment contains many moving parts, components at high temperatures and live wires. Follow the warnings given below very carefully when working in the engine compartment: turn off the engine and wait for it to cool down, do not smoke, do not use naked flames and ensure a fire extinguisher is available. The use of special tools is required for certain procedures. The use of these tools is vital for working in safety.Follow the current workshop safety regulations. Where necessary, the Manual contains specific procedures to be followed to prevent dangerous situations from arising. For the use of chemical products, follow the safety instructions on the card from the supplier to the consumer. The electronic ignition system produces voltages of 20,000 V and above which could be very hazardous to people especially if they are suffering from a heart condition. Therefore take great care when working on these systems or in the vicinity of their components. For the 1.8 version only:The injection-ignition system control unit is a component that is sensitive to electrostatic interference. Do not touch the injection-ignition system control unit once the engine is started unless the static electricity has been discharged first by touching the bodyshell.

WARNINGS

This vehicle is equipped with a starting system known as Smart-Key where there is no longer a traditional ignition key having been replaced with an electronic key "T.E.G." (Transmitter for Entry and go) combined with an electronic key reader and TEG-Reader radio frequency receiver.Access to the vehicle through radiofrequency recognition of the remote control incorporated in the TEG takes place in entirely the same as with the traditional remote control incorporated in the key fob.The vehicle is turned on/started up by inserting the key and turning it in the TEG Reader on the central tunnel. The distribution of the power supply to the vehicle (ignition-controlled INT, INT/A, AVV, etc.) is managed by the steering lock node and takes place in entirely the same way as for models equipped with a conventional key. Before working on the electrical system (connectors, electrical components, wiring etc.), always DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
When the battery is disconnected, the Steering Lock Node remains in the same condition (released or locked) as previously. Whenever it is necessary to turn the steering wheel with the battery disconnected during workshop operations, leave the TEG inserted when disconnecting the battery: the steering will thereby remain unlocked and free to turn.
Whenever the battery terminals are reconnected, proceed as follows:- initialise front and rear windows;- initialise the sun roof;- initialise the sun roof blind;- reset the time and date on the instrument panel;- enter the safety code on the radio (if present);- enter the safety code on the navigation system (if present); All the operations should be carried out taking great care to avoid damage to components. To release parts that are sticking, tap gently using an aluminium or lead mallet if iron materials are involved; use a wooden or resin mallet for light alloy parts. When dismantling, check that components that should be marked have the appropriate references. When refitting, lubricate the parts, where necessary, to prevent seizing during the initial operating period. When refitting it is vital to respect the adjustment nut tightening torques. Each time they are refitted, replace gaskets, oil seals, flexible washers, safetly plates, self-locking nuts, pre-treated screws and all parts that have deteriorated.Use adhesive paper or clean cloths to suitably protect those parts of the engine which, if they remain uncovered after dismantling, will allow dust or foreign bodies to enter.Only genuine spare parts should be used to replace units or components that have been removed. this is the only way of ensuring the interchangeability and perfect operation of the various components.
