199004940 - 5530AB ALTERNATOR OPERATION CHECK

Use a fully charged battery for the test, - the ammeter pliers should be fitted to the battery lead and disconnected with the engine switched off. Take into account that the voltage measured could differ from the standard value depending on the temperature of the regulator as illustrated in the enclosed graph.
STEPCHECK TO BE PERFORMEDREMEDIAL ACTION IF THE CHECK IS NOT OK
1Alternator terminal D+ checkWith the engine running, check that the voltage is more than 5.5 Volts between terminal D+ and earthReplace the regulator    Op. 5530A24 ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR - R.R. WITH ALTERNATOR REMOVED If OK replace the alternator    Op. 5530A10 ALTERNATOR - R+R
2Check the alternator charge with the consumers deactivatedConnect the ammeter pliers EX-02 1000 Ampere to the Examiner diagnostic equipment using the EX01 cable.Position the ammeter pliers so that the positive battery lead passes inside the sensitive ring and the cable being examined is enclosed by the ring.Zero the pliers using the CALIBRATION button on the Examiner.Connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals.Deactivate all the consumers.Start the engine and let it reach 2000 rpmCheck that the voltage is between 14.2 and 14.8 V (at 20°C)Measure the current and check that it is around 3 A ±10% (at 20°C)Check whether the figures are very high or whether there is overloading (excessive escape of electrolyte), whether the voltage regulator is defective or whether the alternator field coil is short circuited to earthCheck that the alternator drive belt tension is correct. If OKReplace the regulator    Op. 5530A24 ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR - R.R. WITH ALTERNATOR REMOVED If OKReplace alternator    Op. 5530A10 ALTERNATOR - R+R
3Check the alternator charge with the consumers activated.Activate the dipped headlightsActivate the heated rear windscreenActivate the passenger compartment heater fan at maximum speedStart the engine and let it reach 2000 rpmCheck that the voltage is between 13 and 14 V (at 20°C)Measure the current and check that it is around 36 A ±20% (at 20°C)Check that the alternator drive belt tension is correct. If OK replace the alternator    Op. 5530A10 ALTERNATOR - R+R
