2585383 - Introduction - ENGINE CRANKCASE

The engine block is spheroidal graphite cast iron, with high mechanical strength. The crankshaft is supported by means of five main bearings. The cylinders are formed directly in the engine block, and are graded into three sizes plus one oversize. There are special channels in the engine block walls which allow the flow of coolant and lubricating oil.

Oil jets cool the pistons.

The diagram below illustrates the oil jets for cooling the pistons.

Operation

There are four oil jets (1) for cooling the piston crown located in the lower part of the cylinder liner/bore (2). The oil jet is directed so that it partly lubricates the machined housing of the connecting rod and piston gudgeon pin.The jets incorporate a ball valve which opens at a pressure of about 1.1 bar.
