312000875 - E2010 SIDE LIGHTS/NUMBER PLATE LIGHT - DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION

The front external vehicle lights feature two additional light units in which the following are available:

  • daylight lights (D.R.L.);
  • side lights (parking);
  • main beam headlamps.
    See E2012 MAIN BEAM HEADLAMPS The daylight lights (D.R.L.) are only switched on by the enablement signal with the key in the MAR position. They are therefore not activated by any control on the steering wheel interface lever; their activation is managed by the Body Computer and can be excluded via the special command in the Set-up menu on the instrument panel.To activate the side lights, turn the special wheel on the left-hand steering wheel interface lever.The wheel only has one position and this also activates the dipped beam lights in the main headlamps.    See E2011 DIPPED HEADLAMPS The daylight lights are simultaneously deactivated.The side lights command function is activated by enablement signals from the ignition switch with the key inserted and turned to MAR, and from the steering wheel interface control: the four side lights are supplied in this way.Their activation is also managed by the Body Computer.For the parking lights and Follow Me Home functions the side lights control is active with the key turned to STOP.The two number plate lights (built into the unit that also includes the boot opening switch) and numerous other interior lights for lighting up the passenger compartment, instruments and controls come on together with the side lights.    See E2530 INSTRUMENT LIGHTING The side lights activation and/or deactivation information is sent by the Body Computer, via the CAN, to the instrument panel for the management of the side lights warning light.The parking lights function makes it possible to switch on the side lights and the number plate lights with the ignition key turned to STOP or removed, to signal the presence of the vehicle whilst it is parked. Activation can only be achieved by rotating the lighting control wheel on the steering wheel interface.If the steering column switch unit left-hand lever is operated (in the same way as for activating the direction indicators) it is possible to choose whether to turn on the side lights on both sides of the vehicle (lever in middle position) or only those on one side (lever downwards to select the left side, lever upwards to select the right side).The function is deactivated by moving the steering wheel interface lighting control wheel to the OFF position or bringing the ignition key to the MAR position. This last operation resets the function: the Body Computer automatically controls the activation of the daylight lights or, if the control on the steering wheel interface control wheel is active, the side/number plate lights.The Follow me home function allows the dipped headlights and the side lights to remain on even after the engine has been switched off (key in STOP position or removed) for a period of 30 seconds or multiples thereof allowing the area in front of the vehicle to be illuminated.This function can be activated by pulling the left-hand lever of the steering wheel interface towards the steering wheel (flash main beams), within two minutes of switching off the engine.This causes the front lights to come on for 30 seconds, a time which can be prolonged by 30 seconds each time the lever is activated, up to a maximum of 210 seconds.When this time is up the lights automatically switch off.When the lever is pulled the side lights warning light comes on in the instrument panel and a message appears on the display for the duration of the function. The warning light comes on when the stalk is pulled for the first time and stays lit until the function switches itself off automatically. Each time the lever is activated the time the lights are on increases.Keep the stalk pulled towards the steering wheel for more than 2 seconds in order to manually interrupt the function.The correct operation of the daylight lights and side and number plate lights is checked by the check function carried out by the Body Computer. The following are checked:

  • open circuit (bulb missing or wiring interrupted);
  • closed circuit to earth (bulb s.c. or wiring s.c. to earth);
  • short circuit to battery voltage (wiring short circuited to Vbatt).
When one of the above situations occurs, the Body Computer makes the fault status available via the CAN network: a special general failure warning light comes on in the instrument panel and, at the same time, the information is shown in the display.The engagement of the side lights enables the switching on of the fog lights using the special control in the centre panel.    See E2030 FOG LIGHTS If the daylight lights or side/number plate lights were already activated during start-up (INT/A), they are temporarily excluded. When the key is next brought to the MAR position, the lights are activated once again.
