312002097 - 5520CA GLOW HEATER PLUGS OPERATION CHECK

The heater plugs are activated when the engine is cold. The heating time is directly proportional to engine temperature
STEPCHECK TO BE PERFORMEDREMEDIAL ACTION IF THE CHECK IS NOT OK
1Heater plugs absorption checkCheck that the battery voltage with no load is not below 12.6 VPlace the 1000 Amp ammeter clamp for the Examiner equipment on the lead of the glow heater plug being tested.Turn the key to the ON position and check the current uptake of the heater plug in questionThe peak average rated current level should be about 13AChecks must be carried out at a constant voltage of 11 VIf the heater plugs do not heat up correctly move on to Step 2Restore the electrical continuity for the supply leads for the heater plugs coming from the preheating control unit.
2Heater plugs power supply checkWith the ignition on (engine cold) check that the power supply for the individual heater plugs is correct during the preheating stageRestore the electrical continuity for the supply leads and for the cable coming from the engine control unit and ensure the cables and the connections for the wiring involved are correctly fastened    See E5050 DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT If the check is OKReplace glow heater plug control unit    Op. 5520C20 HEATER PLUGS CONTROL UNIT - R.R If the check is OKReplace the engine management control unit    Op. 1060G80 DIESEL ELECTRONIC INJECTION CONTROL UNIT - R.R
3Heater plugs checkDisconnect the wiring from the heater plug in questionUsing the Examiner in the ohmmeter function, connect the probes between the body of the heater plug and the threaded end of the heater plug.Check that the resistance for each individual heater plug is between 0.5 and 1 Ohm at 20°CReplace the heater plug    Op. 5520C10 HEATER PLUGS - R+R
