The distribution of the air in the passenger compartment is illustrated in the diagram.
1. Fixed upper diffuser for windscreen defrosting and demisting2. Adjustable centre vents3. Adjustable side vents4. Fixed diffusers for demisting or defrosting side windows5. Front seat footwell fixedd air vents

This vehicle can be equipped with two different climate control systems for the passenger compartment:

  • manual climate control
  • mono-zone automatic climate control
The climate control system makes it possible to vary the specifications of the air introduced into the passenger compartment (temperature, humidity).

The difference between the two types of system, manual and automatic, lies purely in the management of the system:

  • manual climate control: the user sets the air temperature, distribution and flow rate and they remain like that until they are altered by the user later on
  • automatic climate control: the user can set the parameters and select automatic system management. If they so wish, the user can retain the facility to manage the system manually.

Manual climate control

The manual climate control system control panel is illustrated in the diagram below
1. Fan speed selection knob (4 positions) and compressor engagement with LED signalling compressor status2. Air mixture control knob (22 positions)3. Recirculation control knob (2 positions)4. Passenger compartment air distribution selection knob (5 positions)5. Heated rear windscreen activation/deactivation button

Operating strategy

The manual air conditioning also allows the user to manage the temperature and the intake of air into the passenger compartment using the various control knobs.

The following parameters/functions can be altered manually:

  • Temperature
  • Distribution in 5 positions
  • Fan speed.
  • Compressor enablement
  • Defrosting/demisting function
  • Recirculation
The transmission of the air mixing, air distribution and recirculation commands from the knobs to the climate control casing takes place by means of bowden cables. The compressor engagement knob is constructed in such a way that, with the compressor enabled, the user cannot zero the fan speed (turn the knob to zero) to prevent the evaporator from freezing.

There are some limitations set by the outside temperature, measured by the outside temperature sensor incorporated in the left exterior rear view mirro, which restrict the operation of the compressor:

  • if the outside temperature < -1°C the compressor is disabled
  • if the outside temperature > 1°C the compressor is enabled
A further limit is provided by the enablement from the frost sensor that is designed to detect the formation of ice inside the evaporator and, consequently, disable the compressor to prevent the evaporator from freezing.

Automatic climate control

The automatic climate control is the mono zone type with a pollen filter. This system can be managed automatically by an electronic control unit known as the Climate Control Node (NCL) which is charged with keeping the air climate control conditions set, and therefore desired, by the user unchanged. The NCL is connected to the vehicle''s electrical system B-CAN.The NCL is incorporated in the climate control system control panel fitted in the dashboard in the middleThe diagram below illustrates the back of the control unit showing the connections to the electrical system and the connector pin out.

Air flow rate adjustment buttons9. Air distribution selection buttons10. MAX DEF button11. Passenger compartment air temperature sensor12. Heated rear windscreen activation/deactivation button

Operating strategy

The manual system parameters/functions can be altered manually:

  • Temperature
  • Distribution in 5 positions
  • Fan speed.
  • Compressor enablement
  • Defrosting/demisting function
  • Recirculation
Manual selections always take priority over automatic ones and are memorized until the user cancels the command by returning to automatic operation. The manual setting of a function does not adversely affect the control of the other automatic functions, in particular the temperature control is always automatic when the system is operating. All the non adjustment buttons are dual (ON/OFF) including the recirculation. The function is enabled after the button is pressed.Pressing any of the other buttons is only recognized after the previous button has been released.

Introduction to functional status display.

The display of the climate control system function status is shown through the LED and the DISPLAY:

  • RECIRCULATION function: button with vehicle profile and amber LED, signals the recirculation function engaged if on
  • Compressor Enablement Function LED: button with snowflake symbol and amber LED if on, signals the compressor enabled status.
  • AUTO LED: button with the word AUTO and amber LED if on signals that all the functions are managed by the control system. The AUTO LED switches off if there is at least one flow rate, distribution, Compressor or Recirculation manual control.
  • LED for MAX-DEF function: button with amber LED which, if on, signals the activation of the MAX DEF function.
  • HEATED REAR WINDSCREEN function LED: YELLOW, signals the heated rear windscreen function on.
  • DISPLAY: NEGATIVE TRANSREFLECTIVE type displays the passenger compartment fan air flow rate, temperature settings ( in °C or °F ) by means of bars.
  • LED OFF: button with word OFF and amber LED if on, signals the control unit off.
  • Distribution status LED: amber signalling the status of the air distribution in the passenger compartment.

Switching on after vehicle has been stopped

On switching on the various parameters are controlled manually or automatically depending on the selections made by the user before switching off. Therefore all the manual interventions before the vehicle stopped are memorized and maintained until the subsequent starting, except those involving safety (demisting, etc.) which are described below. This is also valid for the OFF function; if it was OFF before switching off, the system will be OFF again when the vehicle is started up.If at the previous key-off, the control was at Max Def, at the next key-on the system will assume the condition memorized before the Max Def.

Control of the temperature

Selection of temperature setting. The choice of the passenger compartment temperature setting is made by the control unit each time the battery is connected at 22 °C. The user can alter the temperatures set using the appropriate buttons. The variations are in steps of 0.5 ºC.The variation in the temperature range goes from 16°C to 32°C; below 16°C the value set becomes "LO", whilst above 32°C the value set becomes "HI".When the control unit is switched off, the temperature value set, shown on the display, is memorized and restored at the next key-on.Winter starting transitionIn order not to create problems for the user, such as blasts of cold air and/misting up of the windscreen, in certain temperature conditions, when the control unit is switched on, the system activates the management of the "WINTER STARTING TRANSITION".

This procedure involves the control unit checking for the simultaneous existence of the following conditions:

  • engine coolant temperature is below - 4°C
  • outside temperature below 19°C

If these conditions exist, the control unit launches the "winter transition starting" procedure, setting:

  • the air flow rate at the first bar
  • the distibution is in Def
  • the mixture in AUTO conditions
It is possible, during the winter starting transition, to switch the compressor on automatically to dehumidify the air.Exit from the winter transition takes place if the outside temperature is above 21°C or if the coolant temperature has reached 50°C.All the manual functions memorized at the previous key off are restored at the end of the winter transition.LO conditionThe maximum cold air conditions are produced by setting the temperature value below 16°C.

This request by the user involves the following actions:

  • Mixer: the air mixture flap should be controlled in the ALL COLD position
  • Distribution: the distribution flap is in the VENT position (by default) and the LED comes on (visible to the user)
  • Ventilation: the air flow rate (by default) is displayed through 10 bars
  • Recirculation: the user setting remains with all the rules defined in the recirculation rules
  • Compressor: enabled (LED on if previously switched off).
All manual settings are allowed in the LO condition. a user request should be managed as a priority over all automatic conditions managed by the control system in the LO state.

The interruption of the management function of the maximum cold state takes place as a result of one of the following functions taking priority over the maximum cold state management (LO):

  • +KEY OFF status management function;
  • OFF status management function;
  • MAX-DEF status management function.
HI conditionThe maximum hot air conditions are produced by setting the temperature value above 32°C.

This request by the user involves the following actions:

  • Mixer: the air mixture flap should be controlled in the ALL HOT position
  • Distribution: the distribution flap is in the FLOOR position (by default) with XX% flow to the DEF and the LED comes on (visible to the user)
  • Ventilation: the air flow rate (by default) is displayed through 10 bars (with limits due to winter transition)
  • Recirculation: the user setting remains with all the rules defined in the recirculation rules
  • Compressor: remains as set by the user
All manual settings are allowed in the HI condition: a user request should be managed as a priority over all automatic conditions managed by the control system in the HI state.

The interruption of the management function of the maximum cold state takes place as a result of one of the following functions taking priority over the maximum cold state management (HI):

  • +KEY OFF status management function;
  • OFF status management function;
  • MAX-DEF status management function.
AUTO function

Pressing the AUTO button, signalled by the LED coming on, returns the control of the following functions to the automatic mode:

  • Air distribution
  • Fan speed
  • Compressor
  • Recirculation

As a result:

  • switching on of AUTO LED
