There are three door opening/closing systems on the Fiat 500:

Mechanical door opening/closing from the outside

The key used is the coded desmodromic type which is combined with the vehicle lock catches.
The key allows the doors to be locked/unlocked from outside the passenger compartment through a catch present in each of the doors.Opening/closing driver''s door and passenger doorThere is a catch in the respective driver''s and passenger door handles which allows the individual door to be locked/unlocked using the mechanical key.To openTurn the key to position 1 and pull the handle upwards.With central locking (where fitted), the doors are unlocked simultaneously when the key is turned.To unlockTurn the key to position 2 with the door perfectly shut.With central locking (where fitted) it is vital that all the doors are properly shut.
Tailgate opening/closingThe opening/closing of the tailgate is mechanical and takes place by inserting the key in the opening in the number plate lights mounting and turning it. This allows the tailgate to be released and consequently opened.To close the tailgate simply push it into the closed position

Electric opening/closing using the mechanical key

This system allows the locks for all the vehicle doors with the exception of the tailgate to be controlled.Door opening/closing from the outsideThe door locks can be locked/unlocked centrally by inserting the key in the driver''s door only and turning it.The locking is signalled by the position of the interior handle (push-pull type) located on each door.If there is a request to lock the doors and one or more of the doors is open, this request will be refused and the doors will remain unlocked.Tailgate opening/closingThe opening/closing of the tailgate is mechanical and takes place by inserting the key in the opening in the number plate lights mounting and turning it. This allows the tailgate to be released and consequently opened.To close the tailgate simply push it into the closed position.

Door locking/unlocking from inside the vehicle

There is a push-pull type handle on the interior trim of all the doors which allows the locking of the individual door to be controlled manually from inside the passenger compartment.To openPull control lever A.With central locking, operating lever A on the driver''s side causes all the doors to be unlocked.On versions with remote control, operating lever A on the passenger side door unlocks that particular door only.On versions without remote control, operating lever A on the passenger side door unlocks all the doors.To unlockPush control lever A towards the door. Operating lever A on the driver''s side produces the central locking.On versions with remote control, operating lever A on the passenger side door locks that particular door only.On versions without remote control, operating lever A on the passenger side door locks all the doors.With mechanical locks, without central locking, closing takes place by operating the individual control levers.

Electric opening/closing using the remote control

This system allows the locks for all the vehicle doors and the tailgate to be controlled.Radiofrequency remote control and functionsThe system for the central opening/closing of the doors and the tailgate includes a radiofrequency remote control that works up to 20 metres away from the vehicle.

The remote control is equipped with:

  • mechanical insert (key);
  • 3 control buttons.
A. Mechanical key insertB. Metal insert opening buttonC. Doors and tailgate unlocking buttonD. Doors and tailgate locking buttonE. Boot unlocking button

The metal insert A operates:

  • the ignition switch;
  • the door locks
  • the fuel cap locking/unlocking;
Pressing button B allows the opening/closing of the metal insert.

The control buttons are designed to:

  • unlock the doors and the tailgate: by pressing once briefly, the doors are unlocked, the boot is unlocked, the interior courtesy lights come on with a delay timer and the direction indicators flash twice (on certain versions/markets) simultaneously. The doors are unlocked automatically if the fuel cut off system intervenes.
  • lock the doors and the tailgate: by pressing once briefly, the doors are locked, the boot is locked, the interior courtesy light goes off and the direction indicators flash once (where planned) simultaneously. If one of the doors remains open, the command is rejected (closing and subsequent reopening of the doors) signalled by the direction indicators flashing; in this case check that all of the doors are properly shut and repeat the locking operation.
  • opening the tailgate, by pressing for a while (more than 1 second), showing that the action is deliberate and not accidental, the tailgate is released; this is confirmed, at the same time, by the direction indicators briefly flashing twice.

Once the tailgate is open it returns to its previous status when it is closed again:

  • if the vehicle was unlocked, the tailgate is unlocked;
  • if the vehicle was locked, the tailgate is locked, realigning itself with the status of the doors.
Tailgate opening using soft touch electric handleIn conjunction with the remote control there is a soft-touch electric handle on the tailgate located on the number plate lights support.This handle can be operated when the tailgate is unlocked (the tailgate is automatically unlocked during the central unlocking of the doors).In this situation the electric handle is enabled and the tailgate can therefore be opened using it: therefore the lock releases the tailgate and allows it to be lifted.When, on the other hand, the tailgate is locked (the tailgate is automatically locked when the doors are locked), it cannot be opened using the electric handle and it remains closed.Door locking/unlocking using the key from the outsideAs well as using the remote control, the lock locking/unlocking mechanisms can be activated using the key in the driver''s door.Locking/unlocking of the locks from the insideAll the doors are centrally locked when the handle on the inside of the driver''s door is pressed.Operating the handles for the other doors locks that individual door.If the handle is operated with the door open, the action is not carried out and the door cannot be locked: this prevents the door being locked accidentally using the keys inside the passenger compartment.All the doors and the tailgate are centrally unlocked when the handle on the inside of the driver''s door is pulled.If there is a request to lock the doors and one or more of the doors is open, this request will be refused and the doors will remain unlocked. This manoeuvre is signalled by the direction indicators flashing.Door locking function management by the body computer nodeFor further details of the door locking function consult:    See descriptions 5505 INSTRUMENT/GAUGE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS

Door locking system auxiliary functions

Automatic central lockingThe automatic locking function for the doors can be enabled or disabled when the speed of the vehicle exceeds 20 km/h using the set up menu in the instrument panel.When the speed returns below 20 Km/h the doors and the tailgate remain locking preventing access from the outside by unauthorised persons.The tailgate is always locked at over 20 Km/h.For more details see:Door unlocking in the case of an accident (on versions with electric locks)In the case of an impact the locks are automatically unlocking via a command from the Body Computer Node to allow the emergency services access to the passenger compartment from the outside.Door unlocking through fuel cut off function (fps: fire prevention system)There is no inertia switch on this vehicle; the Fire Prevention System function (with unlocking of the doors and the boot) is managed by the Air Bag control unit, the Body Computer Node and the Engine Management Node as described in    See descriptions 5505 INSTRUMENT/GAUGE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS

Check panel (on versions with electric locks)

The check panel function is carried out by the display for the control panel which notifies the driver if one or more doors or the tailgate is not properly shut.

Emergency situation

If the vehicle battery does not supply sufficient energy to the central locking / locks electrical system (or the battery is run down or after an accident) it is possible to open the doors mechanically.

The following mechanical back up systems are available:

  • mechanical connection at the exterior handles with the door unlocked using the handle (for emergency access from the outside),
  • mechanical connection at the interior handles with built-in safety unlocking (for leaving the passenger compartment in an emergency),
  • mechanical unlocking of the door locks using the key (for access from the door with the vehicle locked),
  • tailgate mechanical unlocking using the key (where fitted).
