- Position the cylinder head extension in a vice. 1. Using a dial gauge and magnetic base, check that the inlet side camshaft end float is within the recommended values.

If the inlet side camshaft end float is not within the recommended limits, replace the cylinder head extension.
- Undo the bolts loosened previously and remove the camshaft idler gears. 1. Remove the tapered plugs.
- Rotate the camshaft housing through 180°. 1. Undo bolts (1a) and remove inlet side camshaft protective cover (1b), complete with O-ring.2. Remove the exhaust side camshaft oil seal.3. Undo the tapered plug, timing side.
- Release the camshafts. Refitting ( Removing ) - Check that the diameter of the camshaft bearings and the cam lift correspond to the recommended figures.

The surfaces of the cams and the bearings should not show signs of wear, grooves or seizing. If this is not the case, replace the camshafts.
- Place the camshafts in their housings.- Undo the plugs and fit the camshaft centring pins.

1. Fit a new oil seal on the exhaust side camshaft using the tool.

- Fit the inlet side camshaft protective cover in place, complete with a new O-ring and secure it using the bolts.- Rotate the cylinder head extension through 180°.- Fit the tapered plugs in their seats and tighten them to the recommended torque, checking that the maximum projection is 1 mm.

- Place the camshaft idler gears in position and screw in the bolts without tightening them to torque.
Firstly, fit the exhaust side gear; then fit the inlet side gear, aligning the (inner and outer) teeth until they are matched with the teeth on the exhaust side gear.
- Remove the cylinder head extension from the vice and separate it from the support tool.- Place the hydraulic tappets in their housings and fit the retaining tool.
