323001414 - 5040D AIR CONDITIONING CONTROLS

INTRODUCTION

The manual climate control system fitted on the vehicle allows changes in the environmental characteristics of the air taken into the passenger compartment (temperature and humidity), ensures it is filtered and guarantees the demisting of the glazed surfaces.The air conditioning system is a comfort factor that contributes to improving the physiological wellbeing of the vehicle occupants.

Commands

The following functions are available to the user:

  • heating the passenger compartment air;
  • air recirculation;
  • variation of the flow rate of the air entering the passenger compartment;
  • direction of the incoming air flows;
  • air conditioner activation.
These functions can only be set by the user, by means of the control panel illustrated in the diagram below.
A - Air temperature adjustment knob (hot/cold air mixing)B - Fan speed selection knobC - Passenger compartment air distribution selection knobD - Cursor for switching interior air recirculation on/offE - Climate control compressor on/off button (by pressing the knob)The transmission of the air mixture and air distribution commands from the knobs and the air recirculation command from the knob lever to the heater casing takes place by means of transmission cables (bowden cables).The RECIRCULATION function for the ventilation system allows the same air to be recirculated in the passenger compartment, preventing the intake of outside air. This function is useful in order to prevent the intake of unwanted outside air into the passenger compartment (fumes, polluted air when driving in tunnels, etc.).The recirculation control is mechanically activated.The passenger compartment air fan, controlled by the special knob, has 4 different speed settings.The compressor can be turned on by pressing the fan speed selection knob (E) after having set the fan speed in a position other than the rest position.For more details,    See E6020 AIR CONDITIONING

AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL

Introduction

The automatic climate control system is managed by a control unit (NCL) which is capable, thanks to a sophisticated operating logic, of controlling the temperature in the passenger compartment, heating or cooling the air to produce the desired level of comfort.The climate control system automatically adjusts the following parameters/functions:

  • Air temperature at the vents;
  • Air distribution at the vents;
  • Fan speed (continuous variation of the air flow);
  • Compressor engagement (for cooling and dehumidifying the air).
The temperature control is based on the "equivalent temperature": in other words the system works constantly to keep the passenger compartment comfort constant and to compensate for any variations in the outside weather conditions including the sun''s rays detected by the solar sensor.

Climate control system control unit

The climate control system is managed automatically by an electronic control unit known as the Climate Control Node (NCL) which is charged with maintaining the air climate control conditions set by the user. The control unit is a node of the B-CAN.The NCL control unit is incorporated in the climate control system control panel and is fitted centrally, in the dashboard.PIN OUT

Operating logic

Firstly, it is necessary to set the desired equivalent temperature; the system will act on all the variables in its control to ensure the required feeling of heat.The following parameters/functions can also be altered manually:

  • Temperature;
  • Fan speed;
  • Air distribution pattern with 5 positions;
  • Engagement of compressor;
  • Defrosting/demisting function;
  • Recirculation engagement.
Manual selections always take priority over automatic ones and are memorized until the user switches back to automatic operation.The manual setting of a function does not adversely affect the control of the other automatic functions, in particular the temperature control is always automatic when the system is operating.Each time it is switched on, the system restores the conditions memorized when it was turned off, except for:

  • the MAX DEF function, which is zeroed:
  • the recirculation which, with the compressor OFF, is forced open;
  • fan speed (continuous variation).

Operation of the automatic climate control system

When the AUTO button is pressed and the knob turned, a temperature value can be set and is automatically maintained. The system will regulate all the parameters so that the desired temperature is reached as quickly as possible in the passenger compartment.During fully automatic operation the only manual intervention required is the possible activation of the following functions:

  • Air recirculation (to keep the recirculation constantly on or constantly off);
  • Front window, rearscreen and exterior rear view mirrors demisting/defrosting.
During fully automatic operation, it is possible to alter the temperature set, the distribution of the air and the speed of the fan by using the buttons or knobs at any time: the system will automatically alter its settings to adapt to the new requirements.During fully automatic operation (FULL AUTO), when the air distribution and/or flow rate is altered and/or the compressor and/or the recirculation is turned on, the word FULL appears.In this way the functions move from automatic control to manual control until the AUTO button is pressed again.
With one or more functions switched on manually, the adjustment of the intake air temperature continues to be managed automatically, except with the compressor switched off: under these circumstances, the air introduced into the passenger compartment cannot be lower in temperature than the outside air.

Controls

Air temperature adjustment knob (I)When knob (I) is turned clockwise or anti-clockwise, the temperature of the air in the passenger compartment is increased or decreased.The temperature set is shown on the display.When the knob is turned completely to the right or the left until it is in the HI or LO section, the maximum heating or maximum cooling functions respectively are turned on:

  • HI function (maximum heating)
It is switched on by turning the temperature knob until the maximum automatic adjustment value is exceeded (32 °C).Under these circumstances the system exits the automatic temperature adjustment and sets the air mixing to maximum heating, fixing the air speed and distribution. In particular, if the heating fluid is not sufficiently hot, the maximum fan speed does not come on straight away in order to limit the intake of insufficiently hot air into the passenger compartment.All the manual settings are permitted with the function on. To switch the function off, simply turn the temperature knob anti-clockwise, thereby setting the desired temperature.

  • LO function (maximum cooling)
This is switched on by turning the temperature knob anti-clockwise beyond the minimum value (16°C).Under these circumstances the system exits the automatic temperature adjustment and sets the air mixing to maximum cooling, fixing the air speed and distribution.With the function switched on, all manual settings are permitted. To switch the function off, simply turn the temperature knob clockwise, thereby setting the desired temperature.Air distribution buttons (B)By pressing these buttons it is possible to set one of the seven possible air distributions manually:

  • to the windscreen diffusers and front side windows;
  • to the centre and side diffusers;
  • to the front and rear floor area;
  • distributed between the footwell area and the centre and side dashboard vents;
  • distributed between the footwell area and the defrosting/demisting diffusers;
  • distributed between the diffusers for defrosting/demisting and the centre and side dashboard vents;
  • distributed between all the available diffusers.
To restore automatic control of the air distribution after a manual selection, press the AUTO button.Fan speed adjustment buttons (H)By pressing the ends of the button, the fan speed and therefore the quantity of air introduced into the passenger compartment is either increased or decreased. The system, however, maintains the desired temperature.The fan speed is shown by the bars lit up in the display:

  • Maximum fan speed = all the bars lit up;
  • Minimum fan speed = one bar lit up.
The fan can only be excluded if the climate control compressor has been switched off by pressing the button.To restore automatic control of the fan speed after a manual adjustment, press the AUTO button.AUTO (A) buttonWhen the AUTO button is pressed the system automatically adjusts the quantity and distribution of the air introduced into the passenger compartment, cancelling all previous manual adjustments.This condition is signalled by the words FULL AUTO in the display.When intervening manually on at least one of the functions managed automatically by the system (air recirculation, air distribution, fan speed or air conditioning compressor disengagement), the word FULL goes out in the display to signal that the system no longer controls all the functions automatically (the temperature remains controlled automatically).
If, as a result of manual interventions on the functions, the system is no longer capable of guaranteeing that the required temperature in the passenger compartment can be reached and maintained, the temperature set will flash to signal the difficulty encountered by the system and the word AUTO will go out.
To restore automatic system operation at any time after one or more manual selections, press the AUTO button.Air recirculation on/off button (G)Air recirculation is managed according to the following operating logics:
