323000353 - E3020 WINDSCREEN WASH/WIPE - DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION

Windscreen wiper/washer operation is controlled by the lever to the right of the steering wheel. The wheel at the end of the lever can be rotated into four different positions corresponding to four different windscreen wiper operation modes:- windscreen wiper off (stationary);- intermittent/automatic operation (on versions with a rain sensor);- continuous slow operation (1st speed);- continuous fast operation (2nd speed).During intermittent operation the windscreen wiper automatically adapts the speed of the wiper arm according to the speed of the vehicle.Moving the lever upwards activates the panic fast operation windscreen wiper mode; this is an unstable position whose operation is limited to the amount of time the lever is manually held in this position. When released, the lever returns to its original position, automatically stopping the windscreen wiper. The windscreen wiper function can be activated by pulling the lever slightly toward the steering wheel: this operates the windscreen washer pump. Keeping the lever pulled for more than half a second also starts the windscreen wiper (smart washing) at first speed, while, when the lever is released, the windscreen wiper performs 3 more strokes. A final stroke after 6 seconds completes the wiping operation. The intermittent and regular operation of the windscreen wipers as well as the operation of the screen washer pump are managed by the Body Computer and the dedicated windscreen wiper control unit. The windscreen wipers and windscreen washer can only be operated when the key is in the ON position and is exclusive to the ignition phase (INT/A).Some versions are fitted with a rain sensor located behind the interior rear view mirror, in contact with the windscreen; this allows the automatic adjustment of the frequency of the windscreen wiper strokes depending on the intensity of the rain during intermittent operation. To activate the sensor, place the windscreen wiper control in the intermittent operation position. The activation of the sensor is signalled by a stroke of the windscreen wipers. The sensitivity of the rain sensor can be increased via the instrument panel set up menu (on versions with a multifunction display and reconfigurable multifunction display).Moving the control wheel from the intermittent operation position deactivates the rain sensor and associated operation. If the rain sensor is not working properly, the windscreen wiper operates intermittently, whilst sensor failure is signalled in the instrument panel display by the general failure warning light coming on.
