323000860 - 5580C AIR BAG SYSTEM

PASSIVE SAFETY SYSTEM

The vehicle is equipped with an electronic control system that governs the activation of specific containment devices in the event of frontal or side impact:The frontal protection system includes:- driver and passenger front air bags with two-stage activation;- front belts with pretensioner and load limiter;- front impact detection sensor; The side protection system comprises:- two visible sidebags on the front seats (optional);- two window bags housed in the under-roof side members (optional);- two impact detection sensors located in the central pillars. The dual stage front protection system is capable of automatically adapting the activation parameters depending on the seriousness of the impact.Driver and passenger front air bags feature two-stage activation:- when the impact is of moderate severity, the electronic control unit controls the air bag first activation stage and then the second stage after a certain delay to ensure that the energy discharged onto the occupant is not harmful.- for very severe crashes, the control unit activates the first and second stage with a very slight delay in order to absorb the occupant''s greater kinetic energy before he strikes the steering wheel or dashboard. An ECS Early Crash Sensor, located on the front crossmember near the bonnet lock, also helps the electronic control unit in anticipating the activation of the front Air Bags (even for impacts of medium severity) in order to ensure that the pyrotechnic charge is completely used up with the control lunit activating the 2nd stage as well after a preset length of time).
The air bag system components are designed to work on a specific vehicle. They therefore CANNOT be tampered with, adapted or installed on other types of vehicle.
The vehicle must be handed over to the customer with the passenger airbag deactivation control, on the control panel display, in the ON position and the warning light off.
For safety reasons, NO continuity checks can be carried out on the wiring.
The electrical connection between the airbag system components is via dedicated wiring built into the dashboard cable loom and the rear cable loom. The control unit is connected to the system via two connectors, one for the dashboard lead and the other for the rear lead. The control unit is connected to the vehicle CAN network through which it exchanges information with the other nodes, turns on the instrument panel warning lights and carries out diagnostic operations.Because the control unit is a node in the CAN, the airbag system is connected:- to the standard diagnostic socket via the CAN- to the instrument panel, again via the CAN, to control the airbag system failure, seat belt unfastened and passenger airbag deactivated warning lights in addition to the belt unfastened buzzer.- to the Body Computer for potential end of line customisation (Proxy) with a consequent reduction in the number of spare parts.
GRAVE DANGER! The front airbag module MUST be deactivated if a child seat is fitted to the front passenger seat.THIS MAY BE DISABLED BY MEANS OF THE CONTROL PANEL SETUP FUNCTION AND NOT BY USING THE KEY.
If the vehicle is equipped with side bags, deactivation of the front passenger air bag module also disables the side bag.

COMPOSITION

The system consists of the following devices:- an electronic control unit;- driver and passenger front air bags with dual-stage activation;- a supplementary impact detection sensor, the ECS (Early Crash Sensor);- two Side Bags on the front seats;- two window bag modules for the side protection of occupants;- two side impact sensors in the side pillars;- two electronic pretensioners on the front belts. The following indicate the status of the system:- system fault warning light (red) in the instrument panel:- passenger airbag disabled warning light on the instrument panel;- front seat belt unfastened warning light on the instrument panel;- connection via the B-CAN with the diagnostic socket - for function checks using an EXAMINER.

ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT

The following diagram shows the control unit.
1 - Electronic control unit2 - Indication showing direction of motionThe control unit represents the occupant protection system central processing unit and is secured rigidly to the vehicle floor pan near the central tunnel. It manages all the containment system detection and activation devices by processing signals from the various sensors distributed throughout the vehicle and internal sensors.
The control unit must always be fitted with the arrow printed on the adhesive plate facing in the vehicle''s direction of motion.Always check that there are no foreign bodies between the control unit and the body and tighten the bolts to the recommended torque.
If the control unit falls to the ground or is subject to abnormal knocks during handling, it MUST be replaced.

Composition

The control unit has an electronic deceleration sensor which, with the assistance of front and side satellite sensors and, via a dedicated calculation algorithm, manages the activation of the front and side bag modules and the pretensioners.

Operation

Frontal impact:When the impact is of moderate severity, the electronic control unit controls the air bag first activation stage and then the second stage after a certain delay to ensure that the energy discharged onto the occupant is not harmful.Conversely, in the case of very severe impact, the control unit activates both stages almost simultaneously to absorb most of the kinetic energy from the occupant''s body before it strikes the steering wheel or dashboard. The ECS Early Crash Sensor, located on the front crossmember near the bonnet lock, also helps the electronic control unit in anticipating the activation of the front Air Bags (even for impacts of medium severity) in order to ensure that the pyrotechnic charge is completely used up with the control lunit activating the 2nd stage as well after a preset length of time).Side impact:Similarly, when side impact occurs, the control unit is able to recognise direction and intensity and thus activate both air bags and the pretensioners present on the side affected by impact. To provide total cover against side impacts, two satellite sensors located in the centre pillars are used. When there is a side impact, the satellite sensors detect the deceleration due to the impact and the control unit, with the help of a dedicated calculation algorithm, manages the activation of the side bags and the pretensioners. The side air bags (window bags and sidebags) are activated simultaneously and independently of the front safety devices. After each activation of one of the controlled systems (pretensioners, front airbags, sidebags), the control unit stores the activation in its permanent memory and controls activation of the fault warning light on the instrument panel. Before it is replaced, the control unit guarantees individual device activation for a maximum number of:- 3 impacts with activation of front seat belt pretensioners alone;- 3 impacts in total (right or left) with sidebag activation;- 1 impact with activation of the pretensioners and front airbags;- any combination of the above cases up to the maximum number. If one of the limits described is not reached, it will be possible to reuse the control unit after carrying out the RESET procedure using the EXAMINER once system operating conditions have been restored. The final activation, corresponding to the maximum number for the limits indicated above, will prevent further reset procedures.

Self-diagnosis

The control unit carries out continuous self-diagnosis of system operation. Specifically:- it detects and stores faults;- it diagnoses connections to system components and any type of fault that has occurred;- it indicates the source of these faults by turning on a warning light in the instrument panel.Faults stored in the control unit may be deleted only after the fault has been repaired by means of the EXAMINER diagnostic equipment. If the fault is due to an error inside the control unit it should be replaced.

DRIVER''S AIR BAG MODULE

Specifications

The driver''s air bag is a passive safety device. It takes the form of a bag that inflates automatically in the case of frontal impact to interpose itself between the driver''s body and front passenger compartment structures. The Air Bag module is installed in the middle of the steering wheel. The module cover also acts as a horn control.

Composition

The module comprises:- a plastic cover that tears at preset points when activated to allow the bag to expand correctly.- a 60 litre bag, made out of nylon thread woven to minimise skin abrasions in the event of contact and folded in such a way as to ensure that inflation is gradual and not directed toward the driver;- a pyrotechnic type gas generator;- a plasti
