618721 - DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

SUBMERGED PUMP ASSEMBLY COMPLETE WITH LEVEL GAUGE

Composition

Structure

The assembly consists mainly of:

  • fuel pump (1).
  • fuel filter (2).
  • float type level gauge (3).
  • diaphragm pressure regulator (4).
  • mesh prefilter (5).

Type

The fuel pump is equipped with a permanent magnet electric motor (1) that drives pump impeller (2) and a terminal mount cover (3) that contains electrical and hydraulic connections. The pump stage is single, peripheral flow type that offers high performance under low voltage and temperature conditions. The benefits compared to pumps that operate on the volumetric princple are as follows:

  • low weight.
  • compact size.

INERTIA SWITCH

Specifications

Function

The inertia switch is fitted to the left of the driver's seat on the interior sill plate beam. If the vehicle crashes, it cuts off the earth connection of the fuel pump and thus the power supply to the injection system.

COMPOSITION

Operating principles

A steel ball (1) fitted in tapered housing (2) is normally held in place by the attractive force of an adjacent magnet.Under certain acceleration loads, the ball is released from the magnetic lock and gradually emerges upward from the tapered housing following the taper angle.A quick-release mechanism (3) over the ball forms a normally-closed electrical circuit (N.C.).When the ball strikes the mechanism, this changes position from a N.C. circuit to a normally open (N.O.) circuit, thus cutting out the fuel pump earth circuit. The switch may be reset by pressing a button protected by flexible cover (4).
After impact, however slight, do not reset the switch if you smell fuel or notice leaks from the fuel system. Instead, search for the fault and repair it to prevent the risk of fire. Otherwise press the button to reactivate the pump if no leaks are apparent and the car can be driven away.
