This a structural part of the engine with mechanical functions as well as containing the engine oil because it is directly connected to the intermediate shaft support.

The oil sump is made from aluminium alloy and contains special partitions that prevent the engine oil from moving around too much which would have an adverse effect on the pump.There is a reinforcement plate fitted in the lower part of the sump by the splining housing the front section of the exhaust pipe which is designed to restrain the exhaust pipe in the case of sudden impacts.
