841005241 - E5061 ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL DESCRIPTION

Description

The Adaptive Cruise Control option is an autonomous system capable of assisting the driver by controlling both the cruising speed and the distance from the vehicle driving in front. The system is autonomous in that it does not require communication between vehicles equipped with the same optional equipment. The driver remains totally responsible for controlling the vehicle because any time they operate the pedals this deactivates the adaptive cruise control. The function offers the following advantages:

  • It removes the task of having to adjust the speed of the vehicle depending on traffic conditions from the driver
  • It maintains the distance from the vehicle in front within suitable limits
  • It allows peaceful driving and reduces consumption
  • It facilitates traffic flow
After the desired speed has been set by the driver using the SET control, only restricted manual acceleration or deceleration operations are permitted    See E5060 CRUISE CONTROLIf no vehicle is identified in the driving path using the radar installed on the left front area of the vehicle, the system maintains the speed set; if a vehicle is detected in the driving path then the system automatically guarantees that a safe distance will be maintained from the vehicle in front. The driver will be informed of the data concerning the speed set, presence / absence of an obstacle and tracking via the dashboard. There are 5 controls that the driver can make use of for the management of the system:

  • ON / OFF : enables / disables the function
  • SET : sets the speed of the vehicle. The speed of the vehicle at the time of setting is considered the cruising speed. The minimum speed that can be set is 30 Km/h, the maximum is 160 Km/h
  • SPEED INCREASE: this control is used to increase the speed of the vehicle in increments of 10 Km/h.
  • SPEED DECREASE: this control is used to decrease the speed of the vehicle in increments of 10 Km/h. Deceleration also takes place when the brake pedal is operated.
  • RESUME : Whilst driving with the adaptive cruise control system on, the driver can disable it by operating the braking system. In this case the cruising speed set previously will be maintained in the memory and can be resumed using this control.
  • HEADWAY : The FIAT system has adopted the 3 stage Headway system: far, standard and overtake which regulate the distance that the driver wishes to maintain from the vehicle in front
It should also be remembered that it is possible to use the accelerator pedal (override) temporarily bypassing the system. The brake pedal deactivates the system completely.Actual deceleration or braking controlled by the function is transmitted via the C-CAN line from the adaptive cruise control system control unit. This input is received by the braking system check control unit (Brake Assistance) which is capable of intervening on the braking system allowing a decrease in the speed of the vehicle. The different system states are shown to the driver in a summarized, clear manner and include:

  • Display of the speed set
  • Display of the distance from the vehicle or obstacle in front
  • System fault
  • Suggestion to change gear
The function is only activated with the ignition ON (INT).
