939011386 - INTRODUCTION - SEAT BELTS AND ACCESSORIES

WARNINGS

Work carefully on the fittings and use the recommended tools correctly to prevent damage.Take care to avoid any damage to the body paintwork. When working on the seat belt pretensioners, refer to the warnings for the Air Bags    Op. 5580C AIR BAG SYSTEM

PRECAUTIONS

Before working on the electrical system (connectors, electrical components, wiring etc.), always DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
If the battery is disconnected, the Steering Lock Node remains in the condition (unlocked or locked) that it is in: during workshop operations and repairs, whenever it is necessary to turn the steering wheel with the battery disconnected, leave the TEG inserted when the battery is disconnected. The steering will therefore remain released and free to turn.
When working on the seat belt pretensioners, refer to the precautions for the Air Bags    Op. 5580C AIR BAG SYSTEM In particular, with regard to the pretensioners:- Pretensioners are made from pyrotechnic materials and therefore must be moved, handled and stored correctly in order to avoid damage or cracks.- In normal conditions, pretensioners are only activated on the action of the electric ignition control during a collision. During activation small quantities of gas develop. This gas is mostly made up of nitrogen; this is a non-toxic gas.- Pretensioner surfaces must be protected from exposure for over 6 hours to temperatures above 100° C, as well as from sparks and from naked flames.- With temperatures above 180° C the auto-ignition of the gas generator can be checked.- Pretensioners should be protected from the stress of collisions or falls.- Pretensioners that have undergone a fall of over 1 metre onto concrete or similar materials, must no longer be used and should be sent back to the supplier, with details of the fault.- Gas generators must not come into contact with acids, water, grease or heavy metals; contact with these substances can cause the formation of toxic, poisonous gases or explosive compounds.- Un-burnt gas generator fuel is slightly flammable, therefore components should never be dismantled, damaged, sawed or interfered with.
Pretensioners have a validity of 14 years : they therefore need to be replaced after this time.
It is forbidden to store pretensioners with:- flammable materials- combustible materials
It is strictly forbidden to dismantle pretensioners into their component parts.
- When being shipped in on-road vehicles, they must be stored in the luggage compartment. The device cannot be shipped in the passenger compartment.- Buckles with pretensioners should be kept in dry places and protected from dampness.- Buckles with pretensioners must only be kept in cupboards or compartments that can be locked; these must be ventilated and far away from naked flames and heat sources.- During breaks or at the end of a job, buckles with pretensioners must be kept under lock and key.
When working on a vehicle (installation, removal) the following points must be respected:- Do not submit pretensioners to heat, for example during welding, brasing, knocks, drilling, mechanical processes, painting with temperatures over 100° C, etc. When carrying out such processes, the pretensioner must be removed from the vehicle.- If heavy knocks are expected to be made in the area of the electronic control unit, disconnect the battery terminals, carefully isolate them and wait 1 minute- Do not carry out repairs on pretensioners.
- Primed pretensioners that are not installed on the vehicle and are to be scrapped, must first be activated.- Primed pretensioners fitted in the vehicle must not be demolished with the vehicle but removed beforehand.- If a pretensioner fails to activate during an accident, the device should be considered still primed.
