Removing ( Refitting )  - 5530B56  BATTERY DRIP TRAY COVER - R.R.Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
Wait at least 20 seconds after switching off the engine before disconnecting the battery, to allow the electric steering system to complete its switch-off procedure.
 - 5580C18  air bag module - r+r .
Closely follow the safety regulations established for this operation (  See assembly 5580C   air bag system ).
Check that the steering is perfectly locked to prevent accidental rotation.
- 4110A16 steering wheel - r r for replacement or checks for versions with airbag and manual gearbox with hydraulic selection .  - 7040A26  steering column trim - r+r - 5550A12  complete stalk unit - r+r for versions with air bag1. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the ignition switch block (1a) and the anti-theft aerial (1b).

Release the ignition key detection ring from the ignition switch.
1. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the electric steering control unit.

2. Undo the connecting bolt between the steering box pinion and the steering column shaft.
The outer casing of the electric steering device may reach high temperatures following repeated manoeuvres at full load (parking or repeated operations at low speed); it is advisable to check whether the device is hot before touching it.
 - 7040A44  facia lh side cover - r r1. Undo the bolt securing the central tunnel shown in the figure.
1. Undo the bolts securing the electric steering device to the dashboard crosspiece.
The weight of the electric steering device is about 11 kg. It is therefore recommended to remove it carefully.
1. Lower and rotate by 30-40 degrees clockwise the electric steering device.Withdraw the electric steering device.
When handling the electric steering device, follow the instructions given in the 'Warnings and precautions' section 41110D.
1. When replacing the electric steering device, at the bench, undo the fixing bolts (1a) and remove the guard (1b) and the ignition switch (1c).
Refitting ( Removing ) When refitting a new electric steering device, refit the steering lock and guard, fixing them with new bolts.Move the steering column shaft to the minimum length and position the bottom fork on the connection with the steering box pinion.Fit the electric steering device in its housing, rotating it about 30-40 degrees to the right in relation to the assembly position.
When handling the electric steering device, follow the instructions given in the 'Warnings and precautions' section 41110D.
Secure the electric steering device to the crossmember, tightening the bolts to the specified torque.
The weight of the electric steering device is about 11 kg. It is therefore recommended to reposition it carefully.

Secure the right flank of the tunnel, tightening the fixing bolt.Secure the steering column shaft to the steering box pinion, tightening the bolt to the specified torque.

Use a new bolt to fix the bottom fork on the steering box pinion.
If a new electric steering device has been fitted, remove the anti-rotation stop which accompanies the new unit.1. Connect the electrical connectors to the electric steering device control unit.

If the electric power assisted steering unit is being replaced, the 'Fitting Check' procedure must alway be carried out using the Examiner equipment. Select DIAG.ATT to gain access to the guided procedurefor carrying out the specific test on the control unit.
Start the engine and line up the electric steering device, turning the steering full lock twice in both directions.
