194002066 - S028 REAR NOISE (KNOCKING)

Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is knocking coming from the rear suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after     See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING . Carry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.
Test results
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Having carried out the road test, see the Table    S15 RUMOROSITA'' in condizioni di marcia, there was a knocking noise from the back.Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occursEnd of diagnosisThe noise disappears when the brake pedal is operated. The noise disappears when the handbrake is operated    Op. 3380A04 HANDBRAKE - ADJUST TRAVEL
The noise is also present in other conditions.Move on to Step 1
1OIL LEAKS CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Raise the vehicle on a two column lift and check that there are no oil leaks from the shock absorber stem.
Slight dampness on the stem is considered normal because there is evaporation during the operation of the shock absorber.
If there is a persistent oil leak on the shock absorber stem, make sure that it is not coming from other parts of the vehicle that are lubricated
Move on to Step 2Leaks from other parts that are lubricatedSearch for the cause of the leak following the appropriate diagnostic procedure
Leaks from the shock absorber stem.Replace the shock absorber    Op. 4420A30 REAR SUSPENSION SHOCK ABSORBER (ONE), LEFT OR RIGHT - R.R. - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY
2HANDBRAKE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the handbrake cables or outer casing do not knock against the fuel tank, heat shields or bodywork during oscillations.Move on to Step 3Inteference between outer casing or cables and other elementsCover the outer casing with foam rubber tape in the area of the interference or lubricate the cable
3INTERFERENCE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the buffer is correctly fitted in its housing.Move on to Step 4Buffer not correctly fitted.Replace the end of travel buffer    Op. 4420A40 L/H OR R/H REAR SUSPENSION COIL SPRING (ONE) - R+R
4TIGHTENING TORQUE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Locate the area of the possible noise source: top or bottom.Starting from the area where the knocking was identified, check the tightening torques See Test    4420Bon non-shear bolts:- upper shock absorber attachment to the body;- lower shock absorber attachment to the knuckle;- longitudinal arm to the knuckle;- for the brake caliper to steering knuckle;Visually inspect that the yield point type bolts have not loosened, the list is given below:- beam fastening to the body;- fastening of the antiroll bar to the beam;- fastenings of the connection beam to the bar and knuckle;- fastening of the longitudinal arm connection bracket to the body- fastenings of the upper wishbone to the beam and knuckle;- fastenings of the large lower wishbone to the beam and knuckle;- fastenings of the small lower wishbone to the beam and knuckle;- of the knuckle to the bearing.Move on to Step 5Non-shear bolts not tightened to torqueRestore the correct tightness
Shear bolts loosenedReplace the shear bolts and restore the correct tightness
5LONGITUDINAL ARM CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check for damage to the bush securing the longitudinal arm to the body.Move on to Step 6Damage to the bush fastening the longitudinal arm to the body.Replacement of longitudinal arm    Op. 4420C30 L/H OR R/H REAR SUSPENSION TIE ROD (ONE) - R+R
6UPPER WISHBONE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check for clearance in the upper wisbhone attachment to the knuckle and rear frame. Also check the condition of the upper wishbone bushes.Move on to Step 7There is clearance or the bushes are not intact.Replacement of upper transverse arm    Op. 4420B35 REAR SUSPENSION UPPER SWINGING ARM, (ONE) LH OR RH - R R WITH CHECK OF WHEELS ATTITUDE APART
7LARGE LOWER WISHBONE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check for clearance in the large lower wisbhone attachment to the knuckle and rear frame. Also check the condition of the large lower wishbone bushes.Move on to Step 8There is clearance or the bushes are not intact.Replacing the large lower wishbone    Op. 4420B18 REAR SUSPENSION REAR WISHBONE (ONE) - R Rchecking the camber values are correct    Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY
8SMALL LOWER WISHBONE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check for clearance in the small lower wisbhone attachment to the knuckle and rear frame. Also check the condition of the small lower wishbone bushes.Move on to Step 9There is clearance or the bushes are not intact.Replacing the small lower wishbone    Op. 4420B16 REAR SUSPENSION FRONT WISHBONE (ONE)- R Rchecking the toe-in values are correct    Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY
9ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
After disconnecting the upper ball joint on the connection bar to the knuckle, check that the antiroll bar is resistant to manual movement when symmetrical forces are applied.Move on to Step 10The antiroll bar is not resistant to manual movement when symmetrical loads are applied.Replace the anti-roll bar    Op. 4420C10 REAR SUSPENSION STABILIZER BAR - R+R
10CHECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the fault is no longer present.End of diagnosisThe fault persistsThe knocking is caused by another system (e.g. the fuel float in the tank). Carry out the appropriate checks to identify the cause of the noise.
