198003015 - S016 FRONT SUSPENSION NOISE (CREAKING/SQUEAKING)

Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is creaking coming from the front suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after    See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVINGCarry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.
TEST RESULTS
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Having carried out the road test    See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVINGthere was a creaking noise from the front.Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs.End of diagnosis1. The noise is noticeable during steering, even with the vehicle stationary2. The noise only occurs whilst moving1. Move on to Step 12. Move on to Step 2
1MC PHERSON MOVING ELEMENTS CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber buffer plate (visible from the engine compartment side)End of diagnosis1. The buffer plate is loose2. There is contact between the rubber part of the plate and the bodyshell.1. Tighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer plate does not move any more.2.Place a shim no larger than 2.5 mm in between.
2DUST COVER CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that the dust cover is not rubbing against the shock absorber casing, by moving it and applying pressure and releasing it above the shock absorber casingMove on to Step 3There is rubbingReplace the end of travel buffer connected to the dust cover    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R
3END OF TRAVEL BUFFER CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that the end of travel buffer is correctly inserted in its housing    See Test 4410AA CHECK ON CORRECT FITTING OF END OF TRAVEL BUFFER ON FRONT SHOCK ABSORBERMove on to Step 4End of travel buffer not correctly inserted.Refit the buffer correctly.
4CHECKS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENTALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that there are no pipes, cables or shields that could cause interference when the engine movesMove on to Step 5Components incorrectly positionedReposition the components correctly
5CHECKS UNDER THE FLOORALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Position the vehicle on a two column lift and raise it.Check that there are no pipes or heat shields under the floor that are producing noiseMove on to Step 6Pipes or heat shields incorrectly fastenedRestore the correct fastening
6REAR THRUST BUSH CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that there are no signs of wear/tears in the rear rubber bushMove on to Step 7There are signs of wear/tearsReplace the track control arm    Op. 4410B40 LOWER TRACK CONTROL ARM (WITH BALLJOINT) FOR LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION (ONE) - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY
7ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKSALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that there are no faults with the anti-roll bar    See Test 4410CA CHECKS ON FRONT ANTI-ROLL BARSpecifically:- Anti-roll bar correctly positioned in relation to the centre-line of the vehicle- Paint not worn at the points where the bar and the track control arms come into contact.- Condition of flexible mounting in the contact area with the bar and the connecting rod joints.- Fastenings tightened to torque between bar and crossmember- Fastenings to torque between bar and shock absorber connecting rod.Move on to Step 81. Torque tightenings not correct.2. Incorrect positioning of bar in relation to vehicle centre line.3. Paint worn at the contact points (rubbing between anti-roll bar and crossmember and anti-roll bar and track control arm).4. Signs of tearing or damage to the flexible mountings.5. Signs of tearing at the track rod end boots or loose connecting rod not moving smoothly.1. Restore the correct tightness2. Replace the anti-roll bar    Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 3. Replace the anti-roll bar    Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 4. Replace the anti-roll bar    Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 5. Replace the connecting rod    Op. 4410C12 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI ROLL BAR JOINT (END) (ONE), LH OR RH - R.R
8SPRING/SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that the mountings fastening the suspension to the bodyshell (at the shock absorber turrets) do not show signs of wear on account of rubbing. The shock absorber must be removed for this check    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R Also check that the positioning and the fitting of the semi-corner assembly (spring-shock absorber assembly).    See Test 4410AE CHECK ON CORRECT ADJUSTMENT OF THE SHOCK ABSORBER/SPRING ASSEMBLY Check the condition of the spring lower seal and the rubber coating for the upper shim.Check that there are no signs of rubbing on the suspension spring at its supports. Also check that the spring shows no signs of wearEnd of diagnosis1. Semi corner units incorrectly positioned or fitted.2. Signs of tearing on the rubberized plate.3. Spring worn.4. Check the condition of the paint on the top part of the plate.1. Restore the correct fitting/positioning of the components2. Replace the components making sure that they are correctly position (spring in contact with the lower plate projection).3. Replace the shock absorber spring    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R and the lower seal if damaged.4. Only replace the shock absorber if there is obvious abrasion
