199000891 - S016 FRONT SUSPENSION NOISE (CREAKING/SQUEAKING)

Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is creaking coming from the front suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after diagnosis    See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVINGCarry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.
Test results
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
After carrying out a road test during diagnosis, a noise is heard from the front identifiable as a squeaking/creaking.    See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVINGContinue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs.End of diagnosis1. The noise is noticeable during steering, even with the vehicle stationary2. The noise only occurs whilst moving1. Move on to Step 12. Move on to Step 2
1MC PHERSON MOVING ELEMENTS CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber buffer plate (visible from the engine compartment side)End of diagnosis1. The buffer plate is loose2. There is contact between the rubber part of the plate and the bodyshell1. Tighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer plate does not move any more2. Place a shim no larger than 2 mm in between
2DUST COVER CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the dust cover is not rubbing against the shock absorber casing, by moving it and applying pressure and releasing it above the shock absorber casingMove on to Step 3There is rubbingReplace the end of travel buffer    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R
3END OF TRAVEL BUFFER CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the end stop buffer is correctly inserted in its housing (raise the dust guard).Move on to Step 41. End travel stop incorrectly inserted (correct insertion is with the largest diameter side facing up)2. End of travel buffer deteriorated.1. Replace the end of travel buffer    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R 2. Replace the end of travel buffer [PR_4410A70].    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R
4CHECKS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENTAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that there are no pipes, cables or shields that could cause interference when the engine movesMove on to Step 5Components incorrectly positionedReposition the components correctly
5CHECKS UNDER THE FLOORAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Position the vehicle on a two column lift and raise it.Check that there are no pipes or heat shields under the floor that are producing noiseMove on to Step 6Pipes or heat shields incorrectly fastenedRestore the correct tightening.
6TRACK CONTROL ARM BUSHES CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check the condition of the track control arm front and rear bushMove on to Step 71. Front bush not intact2. Rear bush not intact1. Replace the front bushOp. 4410B50 BUSHES FOR L/H OR R/H FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER TRACK CONTROL ARM - REPLACE AT BENCH2. Replace the rear bushingOp. 4410B52 FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER TRACK CONTROL ARM REAR BUSH LEFT OR RIGHT - REPLACE AT BENCH
7ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that there are no faults with the anti-roll bar    See Test 4410CA CHECKS ON FRONT ANTI-ROLL BARMore specifically:- Anti-roll bar correctly positioned in relation to the centre-line of the vehicle- Paint not worn at the points where the bar and the track control arms come into contact- Condition of flexible mounting in the contact area with the bar- Fastenings tightened to torque between bar and crossmember- Fastenings tightened to torque between the bar and rod and between the rod and shock absorber bracketMove on to Step 81. Torque tightenings not correct2. Bar not correctly positioned3. Paint worn at the contact points (rubbing between bar-wishbones).4. Signs of tears/damage to flexible block1. Restore the correct tightening.2. Replace the anti-roll bar    Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 3. Replace the anti-roll bar    Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 4. Replace the anti-roll bar    Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY
8SPRING/SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the mountings fastening the suspension to the bodyshell (at the shock absorber turrets) do not show signs of wear on account of rubbing. The shock absorber must be removed for this check    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R Also check that the positioning and the fitting of the semi-corner assembly (spring-shock absorber assembly) is correct.Check that there are no signs of rubbing on the suspension spring at its supports. Also check that the spring shows no signs of wear
If the spring shows signs of abrasion, its mechanical properties could be weakened as a result of oxidation.
End of diagnosis1. Positioning or fitting of semi-corner assembly not correct2. Signs of tears/damage to shock absorber blocks/pads3. Spring worn4. Signs of rubbing between spring and supports1. Restore the correct fitting/positioning of the components2. Replace the components and ensure they are correctly positioned3. Replace the shock absorber spring (ensure that the first coil is correctly positioned on the shock absorber plate, 4 mm at most from the contact point)    Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R 4. Refit correctly
